check engine light V70-XC70

I have a brand new to me 98 XC. My check engine light has gone on while the car is running fine. I noticed in my manual it states the check engine light can go on due to filling the gas tank while the vehile is running. I am wondering how common this check engine light due to fueling situation is? Is there any way to clear the code?
I appreciate the suggestions.
Jess

I've had this happen on my '99 X/C a number of times due to the gas cap being improperly installed. The check engine light has always gone off by itself after 2 or 3 days. The gas cap on this car does not have a user friendly design. I've gassed up in NJ 6 or 7 times where there are no self service stations, and have never had the gas cap put back on properly. My wife is also has a problem getting back on correctly as well.

    Good Luck

Although gas cap related codes are common, they're also not always caused by a loose gas cap either. A scan tool is required to read and erase whatever code(s) is causing the problem. There are also many other sensor related problems that can cause a check engine light so it's best to have it diagnosed by someone with a scan tool (dealer, etc).

You can reset the light by disconnecting the battery for about 30 seconds. Make sure you know your radio reset code before doing so. I do agree with RJ that it should be checked out though.

If it is a loose gas cap just tighten it at least 3 clicks and drive the car. After several days of use the code will clear itself once the ECU does not see a recurrance of the problem. If the code does not clear after several days of driving and the cap is tight then you probably have a problem elsewhere. The gas tank is a pressurized system and OBDII software monitors the pressure level. A loose or bad gas cap or pressure sensor are several possibilities.

I also have a 1998 XC and have had the check engine light come on a number of times since I bought the car 18 months ago. While the earlier explanations were correct, I wanted to offer another source of the code that you should check for.

My service center found a few weeks back that the code that was read out from the car's computer indicated a "gas tank vacuum loss," typically associated with a loose gas cap. After clearing it, it came back within one day. It would up being a rotted fuel hose that needed to be replaced. Cheap, but a safety issue. Make sure that they check yours thoroughly, as I had to go back to the place twice and wasted a lot of time.
