gas mileage 850 1995

I am curious about the gas mileage others are getting out of their 850 non turbo cars. I put about 35,000 miles on a year and would like to get better gas mileage than my current 28 miles per cdn gallon. (a cdn gallon is 4.5 litres and the US gallon is about 4 litres as well) Now my driving habits are consistent I always drive between 70 and 80 miles per hour and 90% of my driving is on secondary highways with low traffic. In fact I don’t notice much difference in gas mileage at either speed.

Is this consistent with other owners?

What’s the chance of Volve bringing a diesel back to the north American market?

my wife's 94 850 glt gets about 20 mpg city right now--she used to get about 25 mpg mixed. we can get about 32/33 mpg when we drive between los angeles and san francisco.

the big burn for me is that it's about the same as my honda accord!

I drive a wagon, non-turbo, 5-speed. I have been getting, on the average, 25mph in city driving. On the highway I got 32.7 mpg over a roundtrip of 320 miles, but this needs to be confirmed with more highway driving in the future.

I will get about 29 mpg with steady highway driving, and about 26/27 typically on my mostly secondary road commute. My lowest ever milage was about 24 mpg.

As of this evening, when I filled up I got:

301.5 miles with 12.608 gal (US) for a total of 23.92 mpg.

I do mainly freeway driving (80 miles daily commute) with several large hills. This is also while keeping to 70 mph on cruise, with sport mode on. The A/C is on with the fan usually on medium. I'm just about to get the 90k tune-up done, so hopefully this will improve a little =)

I have a turbo, which dosn't help you much, but I get about 24/28-29, because I like to punch it sometimes...

Although they have the common rail desiel in Europe, I doubt Volvo will bring it over here mostly because of EPA BS, and Diesel avalibility....pretty much nobody in the US is selling a deseil car new right now. If you want to read about it though, go check out www.swedespeed.com

I think Brandon made a mention of the new Volvo D5 Diesel. VW is currently selling their TDI (Turbo Direct Injection) which get 50 + MPG. They are available in the Jetta, Bug, and Golf. They have been selling out since their introduction in 1996 with the Passat which I had in a TDI. Right now there is a 6 month plus waiting list on the new diesels.

Mercedes has confirmed plans to bring their new direct injection diesel to the US by 2004. www.dieselforum.org. Plus I received confirmation from MB USA.

I have also been asking Volvo about the D5 and they confirmed plans that the D5, yes thats right the new diesel will be available in the states by 2004 and 2005. This will run in conjunction with the lower sulpher diesel fuel that will become available. This car will pass emissions today and lets not forget that diesel emmite less hydro carbons and 50-70% less CO2.
      ...

The D5 in V70 wagon form gets 65 MPG on the highway. You can check Volvos site and do the conversion plus I can tell you from personal driving experience.

To answer your question my 850 5 speed averages 31-32 on the highway 27-28 in mixed driving. I would say you are doing oka for mileage.

      John,,,waiting for a D5

Indeed I was, although I didn't state it very clearly or correctly. Why I didn't, not sure =) Anyway, they've planning to bring it back? That's great! Now they just have to get rid of public preconceptions about diesel being bad =) Saying it's 50% more powerful outta do it though =) Gotta love that great low end torque =)
