No start, hard start, stalls/shuts down when engine cooling fan comes on. 850

I recently posted a message about my '94 850 having an intermittent hard start condition. The car would intermittently not start, it would crank over but not start. It might me 10 minutes or 8 hours before it would start again. Once running it was fine. Might start again for the next twenty times, might not. It now will shut the engine off while driving. I noticed last night while trouble shooting that once I did get it start, it ran fine, until the fan kicked on. The moment the fan kicked on I saw the check engine light flash on and the engine shut down. I have been unsuccessful at getting it restarted.

So far I have replaced the fuel filter, then the fuel pump, and will be replacing the fuel pump relay tonight. I would appreciate any advise on what to do next. I'd like to correct it myself or at least get it running long enough to ddrive it to a dealer for analysis.

It's very easy to read the error codes on the 94 & 95 models. The procedure can be found here if you search for it. Also check Volvospeed.com for Bay13. Lots of valuable proceedures there.

I know the impulse is to buy what you think would fix the problem but just because the check engine light isn't on doesn't mean the ECU isn't storing codes. If you don't have a Haynes manual I reccommend getting one. $20 or less at Autozone or ebay.

Good luck,

Throw money at it... 850

..and maybe the problem will go away. I've been reading/participating on the BrickBoard for three years. I'm always amazed at why some folks just start swapping out parts when their cars aren't running right. It seems to me to be a VERY expensive and frustrating way to get it done.

Before replacing the fuel pump, did you run any diagnostics? Check it with a voltmeter? Or just switch & pray?

Now for some wild guesses. Crank position sensor. Cam position sensor. Please read the codes, and start from there.

Does your model have the fault diagnostic port for reading the codes? If it does then get yourself a haynes manual as it lists the procedure and all codes.

Ive never done it, so cant give advice.
