ABS Control Modual V70-XC70 1998

The dealer wants over a $1000.00 to install the ABS control modual in my '98 V70R. Has anyone done this on their own and what kind of job am I looking at? I have a feeling that it is a PIA. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
JF

The only real notice other than the lights comming on, was sometimes my brake pedal feels a little funny. Sort of like the ABS is kicking in, but only then for a second.

ABS Control Modual V70-XC70 1998

Thanks for all the info, guys. I too found the part for around $350.00 and am going to install it myself. It will probably take a while, but my time is free!
If anyone has any hints or tips, please let me know. Thanks, JF

A favor to ask. V70-XC70 1998

After you take out the old one, take a picture of it (if you have a digital camera) and email it to me. And if you're particularly ambitious, take a close look at the soldering and see if the widely reported cracks in soldered connections are visible. Finally, write up your experience and procedure. I can post it on a website for the future reference of all. (I might try to convince Volvospeed to update their discussion of this problem on their Bay13 site.)

David,

I will do as you ask as soon as I can get the old one off. Not much space to work in, but I'll figure it out.

Thanks,
JF

Thats over $500 in labor for a job that would take an experienced tech about 15 or 20 minutes to complete.

My local dealer charged me $160 for labor, and $416 for the part. However, if you buy the part from Volvo of Houston its ony $348 + $40 core charge. Still you come out ahead even with shipping. If you dealer wants $1,000, tell him to take a hike cause your not going to pay that.

Look for someone else. An Indy tech maybe. Someone claiming to be Frank, who claims to be a Volvo tech, thinks this is difficult, but others have written that they've done it themselves. Mine cost $450, installed.

Correction V70-XC70 1998

I work at a dealer and I've never said that replacing that part was difficult. The part costs $416 (exactly) at my dealers parts department and the part just unscrews with 4 inverted torx screws (new ones included too). I'd say that realistically, the job's probably worth about 1 hour in a shop considering diagnostic time (reading codes with a scan tool) as no one works for free.
If one wants to just replace the module themselves w/o paying any diagnostic labor (assuming it's the control module), then one could do it themselves and save themselves some money.

Re-Correction V70-XC70 1998

$348 for the part today at a couple internet sites and a Volvo parts counter near me. I paid $450 installed less than a year ago.

Jef,

I have a 98 V70 also. Mine is the AWD model, but no R.

I posted last month, and someone answered that the cost to them was areund $450.00 at the dealer to replace the module. (abs/tracs light coming on)

Your estimate seems unreasonable. I am taking mine in to get the estimate in the next few days, and I will post the cost immediately thereafter.

Regards,

Mike Harris in Sandy Eggo
