what % of owners have changed Timing Belt and Water Pump at the same time ?? 850

Its time to change the timing belt on my 1995 850 and I have been hearing from people and dealers that the water pump needs to be changed at the same time.
I am curious how many have changed timing belt and water pump at the same time..is it worth it ..if the water pump needs to be replaced..should i buy a new one or re-manufactured

DOes anyone know where is a good place to buy a new water pump on web if I need one..

thanks

I asked my dealer mechanic this same question. Both he and the service manager said that they normally don't advise replacing the water pump unless it is showing signs of leakage (don't fix it if it ain't broke). I guess it is a personal choice. How much is a new H2O pump anyway?

Oddly enough I got one of each 850

I remember that a waterpump replacement was routinely done with the T-belts on a whole lot of cars

I got my 850 first and hit 70K, the "trusted indie" did the water pump too, as a matter of course

my wife got her 850 a year later and the dealer (we're now about 80 miles from the trusted indie) told us not to replace the H20 pump (and they're on the hook for a waranty) even though I asked and expected them to do it.

I'd say change it at 140K miles if you really want to change it, but given the way the dealer dealt with it, I have to go with the 850 doesn't need the change at 70K

Is this the second T-Belt? 850

...140k miles? If so, consider replacing the tensioner and idler pulleys (2) Check them by rotating them by hand, and feeling for any wobble or roughness. I'm curious as to what people and which dealers have been feeding you with that info???

Every Second T-Belt Change (140-280-420-560...) 850

I'm planning on replacing the WP and the tensioner 140,000 miles. Oddly enough you don't just get the nonsense from parts places but also from Volvo NA. My ('98) manual says change the TB at 70K, but the Volvo "virtual glovebox" said (past tense) change the '98 TB and the tensioner at 105k, which should be correct for '99 up, not the '94-98 engines. I asked my dealer, and e-mailed Volvo NA, and the next time I checked the site it was back to 70k but they still said to change the tensioner. The story I got from the dealer and the Volvo indies is that the tensioner and the WP rarely fail, but they're not going to have to pay for the crashed head, so I plan to replace them all next time. Since I had already had the TB replaced I wasn't going to go back and change the tensioner, especially since they can't seem to get this story straight, but I'm definitely planning on doing it all at 140k.

Then I'd just change the TB ar 210,000....I doubt this aluminum wonder is going to make it to a 4th TB change at 280,000, but who knows?

Water Pumps on the 850's are Robust- 850

No need to change out the water pump unless it is leaking- or fells rough when turned by hand.

Water pumps on the 850's are known to be robust - uncommon for them to fail.

If you have a burning desire to replace the pump - replace it with a genuine Volvo part.

BTW- the guys at the auto parts stores always recommend replacing the water pump- suppose it's so they can sell you the part?

I would Definately change your water pump when you change your T-belt if it required doing what you would need to do to replace the T-belt. A new belt is tighter and puts more strain on an old pump. Frequently the pump will fail soon after the timing belt. I wish I replaced my water pump when I had my T-belt done.

Have to disagree... 850

A new belt will have the same tension as the old belt, because the belt is automatically tensioned by the hydraulic tensioner. As was mentioned, 850/70 series water pumps are not prone to failure (like on the "red" engines) and most will easily make it past 200k (or so states my Indie Mechanic)
