A test of knowledge - volvo head unit question. 850

Im not using my real name as i dont want to be disliked but i have asked questions on this board and seem to get either no responses or silly answers. This question is to see how knowledgeable you all are about your volvo's

Q) I have a 801 head unit with a cd-changed using an rf modulator to feed the audio to the head unit.

what i want to know is does anyone know the pin designations for the din connectors on the back of the head unit.I want to connect an external amp to the back and am not sure what one's are compatible. Also the cd din should have a couple if pins for audio in that i can use for direct input.

I want to know this as i want to keep the same head unit but upgrade the speakers and power output.I am also wanting to connect an mp3 player but dont want to use cassette adapters/rf modulators.

C'mon Mrsha, can't we all just get along.... Rodney King 850

That's a tough question, I agree most folks here are practical and would seek the path of least resistance ie go with Cruthfield, etc.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My lack of knowledge concerning after market CD changers has prompted me to develop this hopefully helpful guide for Volvo owners that are trying to find various signals on the connectors on the back of the radio. This layout is taken from a 1995 schematic, I will check newer schematics to see if the lay out and wire colors have changed. 16/1 is the circuit designation for the two connectors. The two connectors are further broken down to "A" for the 14 pin (larger) connector and "B" for the 10 pin (smaller) connector. Lead colors are shown by letters: SB = Black, GR = Gray, W = White, R = Red, BN = Brown, Y = Yellow, P = Pink, BL = Blue, GN = Green, OR = Orange, VO = Violet. To further break down the 14 pin "A" connector: 1A = Dash Left Speaker +, 2A = Dash Left Speaker -, 3A = Antenna +, 4A = Battery + 12V, 5A = Not used, 6A = Ground, 7A = Dash Right Speaker +, 8A = Dash Right Speaker -, 9A = Not used, 10A = Rheostat +, 11A = Rheostat Ground, 12A Battery + 12V , 13A = ACC +, 14A = Ground. Breaking down the 10 pin "B" connector: 1B = Left Rear Speaker -, 2B = Left Rear Speaker +, 3B = Left Front Door Speaker -, 4B = Left Front Door Speaker +, 5B = Right Rear Speaker -, 6B = Right Rear Speaker +, 7B & 8B = Not used, 9B = Right Front Door Speaker -, 10B = Right Front Door Speaker + . The rear speaker wires supply the rear hat shelf and door speakers if installed, wire coloring is the same for the hat shelf and the rear door speakers

Most members of this board would never dislike you for any question, silly or otherwise. Sometimes people get frisky though.

Without a factory diagram, the only way you could trace all the wires would be to inject a signal on each wire and trace it to its destination. Even then you might not figure where each wire comes from. This could damage something in the process.

BTW - We have equipment that analyzes your spelling, punctuation, language, and grammar to tell us who you are. We already know who you are ;)

Find an amp with speaker lines's high input and extra RCA input for your speaker upgrade and MP3 hook up. No idea about the CD issue. Then you'll have to solve the power source for your MP3, AMP in the trunk and MP3 in the front, all that wiring will just make a mess of your car and get crappy sound quality. Like other had said, spend the money on a decent head unit with MP3 fucntion and the ability to drive your new speakers.

No one here would know that 850

No one who works on Volvos or owns them would know radio wiring specifics like that as most don't do what you're trying to do. Most people who buy Volvos are happy enough to go to a BB (crutchfield or wherever) and buy a unit which simply plugs into their existing harness w/o knowing specifics IF they're using anything but stock and trying to do that themselves.
What you need is an OEM wiring manual for your car which should show you those pins and you can order it by calling 800-25-volvo.
