The car I am looking at does not have the "GLT" decall (1995), but the seller claims that it is a GLT....is there something the GLTs had that the standard did not ? The car has alloys, roof rack, premium stereo, AT, power everything, leather seats...
Thnaks.

You know, I recently bought a '95 850 Turbo (that's all it said on the back of the car) and when I went to register it, the registration came back saying it was a GLT. My insurance guy did the registration and when I asked him if it was an error, he said no, the exact model designation came from the VIN number they put in to the system at the registry.
My car does have the alloy wheels, leather, sunroof, premium sound, TRACS, heated seats and mirrors, headlight wipers. I like it.

simple thing ...does ur car have a "not-so-informative" turbo boost gauge? if so, then yes, turbo...if no..then well, n/a engine...

Sounds like a GLT. Does it have the sunroof? Our 95 GLT
wagon has leather, sunroof, 15" alloy wheels, AT, AM/FM/Cassette.
No cold weather package. It also has side airbags which were
optional in 95. Sunroof may also have been optional but I
think you had to order a GLT that way.
ALL 850's sold in U.S. (base and GLT) have the 20 valve engine so
they are all the 167 HP version (unless they have turbo which was
introduced in 97). I think the first post refered to the 10 valve
version of the engine which was available in Canada and other markets
(not sure where you are).

I am in the US...and yes the car has a sunroof....I gues as long as I get the options I care about it does not matter if it is a GLT or not....they all have the same 20V engine...
Thanks for all replies...

My indy tech believes the original GLT designation implied that it had the cold weather package (heated seats, headlight wipers, winter mode shifter). In the later model years it acquired the low pressure turbo. Given Volvo's muddled thinking about branding and marketing, one can never be sure. (Historically, G and T mean grand touring and I suppose the L could mean a luxury edition though Volvos have traditionally been spare in that department...true to their Nordic heritage.) A good example is the SE designation on my car. It means 'special edition' but one would be hard pressed to discover what's so special about the package - every S70 T5 shares at least 98% of whatever's in my SE, except maybe the suede/topgrain leather seats and the 'wood' (yeah, right) steering wheel.

Try driving it , the 2,5 GLT ´92 - ´96 has 170hk while the standard 2,5 engine has 144hk , try it and compare it to a standard you try.
you should feel the difference between 144 and 170hk ...
good luck

I've got the standard 96 850, and it's got 170hp. No leather seats, manual seat adjuster, steel wheels, and oh, a nice plastic auto shift knob. Like Spaten's, mine didn't come with a GLT branded on its rear. With the 170hp, does that mean I've got the GLT and didn't even know it?

Nope, does not mean you have a GLT. The confusion is probably that
in non U.S. markets there is a 10 valve version of the 5 cylinder
engine (2 valves per cylinder).
U.S. market 850s all got the 20 valve version (4 valves per cylinder),
including the base models. I suspect exactly what a GLT is was set
by Volvo North America marketing and is different then other markets.
There are also 2.0 liter turbo versions of the 5 cylinder, diesels,
S80's with 5 cylinder engines (6 cylinder only in U.S.), etc. available
in various world markets.

I have an '93 GLT Sedan. It's got 15" alloy rims, non-turbo 20 valve engine, half-leather seats (heated), no sunroof, and an 8 speaker sound system.
