Manual transmission scraping/hissing 850

OK guys, i have tried to ask this question before but did not get too many answers.

Car is a 1996 850 GLT NA 150000km.
At low rpms, when you apply the accelerator, there is a scraping/grinding/hissing sound. No other problems with gearbox, smooth shifts.
Trans axles clunk a bit so they may need replacing, no problems with rubber covers. How do one tell which end is faulty? Could this cause the sound?

So what is the cause of this?
-Throw out bearing?
-Trans axle(s)?
-Pinjong bearing? I don't know the english word (from sweden)
-Worn gearbox gearing
-???

In need of help because i am going to do rear main seal and i want to do this at the same time.

/Pete

Sounds like my 98 T5M. When I let out the clutch I sometimes get
a scarping sound. Not always. Sometimes in 2nd or 3rd gear, too.
I believe it is the throw-out bearing and a couple others have reported
the same thing on this board. One poster indicated a noisy
throw-out bearing is a common problem but that does not mean it is going
to fail any time soon. He also suggested squirting some wd40 down the
actuating arm to quiet it a bit (and said it would not hurt the clutch).
I have not tried Wd40. It has been making the noise for about 20K miles
    with no other problems.

Does your's do it every time? I can adjust how fast I let out the
clutch and that seems to make a difference.

It does not make a sound when i let out the clutch. Only when i apply some gas when the clutch is fully let out.
I have had some indications that the throwout bearing actually can make some sound when the clutch is let out since it is still rotating...but i am not that good at transmissions...

      Ray,

I would not pass along this kind of advise. I am not familiar with the clutch assembly on an 850, but if it is like just about every other manual-transmissioned car, you wouldn't want to be introducing any kind of lubricant into the clutch area in an attempt to lubricate the throw-out bearing.

Automotive clutches are dry-plate designs which do not like lubricants.

Following this advice would immediately move you from a noisy throw-out bearing problem to a complete clutch job problem.

    Hi there!
I had a similar sound in my 855 turbo.
It turned out to be very loose pressure plate springs that were rattling away.
Once replaced the problem was cured....hope that helps.

OK, that sounds very interesting! If you have any further info about the symptoms please let me know. I'll probably replace the clutch since i'm doing the rear main seal anyhow.
