Temp Gauge misbehaving!! 850 1997

Over the last two weeks, my temp. gauge has been REALLY slow getting to 3'oclock!
Before it would get to 3 O'C in about 2-3mins, if it was the first start for the day. Now it takes about 10-15mins. Since it's summer, I would expect it to get up to operating temp. sooner. Sometimes after 4-5mins of waiting, i would just rev the engine to about 3000rpm and it raises the gauge sooner. Is my thermostat gone? a bad valve or something?? Thanks for all responses, D

thanks guys. I will remedy the problem this week. Now, just today my check engine light came on, and i'm assuming it may be as a result of the stuck thermostat. Since I HAVE to go see my 'friendly dealer' to read the codes and reset, I was wondering what are the likely code #s he should be reading to me. (Can you tell I like to go so him with 'ammos' in my belt-clip). thanks as always. BD
P.S- how $$$(average) is a new thermostat, cause I recall this problem in the past! THX

I'd say your thermostat is stuck open. This will allow coolant from the radiator to flow through the block and head before the engine is fully warmed up.

Normally, the Tstat stays closed until the coolant reaches the predetermined temperature. When closed, coolant only circulates through the engine and heater core, allowing faster warmup. Only when it opens does the radiator come into the circuit to shed excess heat.

Go to:

for the complete skinny on replacement of the tstat and ect sensor.
Good luck.
