abs tracs 850

BLAH i was driving down the load today, ABS and tracs light went on. Stupid ABS computer. Question is how hard is thing to get out of my 96 850? I could probably find a solder flow tank here and possibly fix it. If i could just get the thing out. Would the car be driveable while removed? Also i have no tools out here in iowa, so im really hoping its easy to remove.

Look for recent posts by Gazzer and Frank, both Volvo certified techs. In the meantime, you can drive your car just the way it is....you just don't have ABS at the moment.

Gazzer hints that there are a couple solder fixes, and a hardwire jumper(?) or two. Frank suggests there may be a gel sealant around the board, and writes that Volvo is now recovering these units for remanufacturing. (Might check w/ Volvo or someone to see if you can find a remanufactured unit...) I think Gazzer repairs them, Frank sends them out.

The ABS unit is below the master cylinder (at least in my S70), not an easy spot to get to. You'll undoubdtedly have to disconnect brake lines so be prepared to bleed brakes afterward. Once disconnected, I doubt you can drive it until it's all back together.

In previous posts I've written that I would eagerly attempt this myself when the time comes (and I will), but I would have to learn a whole lot more than I know at this moment before I heated up the flowtank....or gave anymore advice than I have already. I'll be watching the posts here with interest. Good luck.

      What year? 850

The year for major ABS control unit failures was '98 X70s, not so bad before or after. At a dealer, we don't send them out, we get new units (or so they appear) and there is now a core charge on them so they "might be" rebuilt but I can't be certain. It's possible that Volvo is just getting them back to inspect them too.
There is a clear, rubbery gel coating on the inside of everyone I've cut opened and it's there for waterproofing. It's my opinion that re-soldering the board is just a guess as to what's really needed and doing so would not be an easy task for anyone with basic home type soldering equipment.

I ask "what year" here because IF it's a '96 850, THAT year had another very well known wiring problem, was a service bulletin on how to fix 4 bad crimp connections under the fuse box. '96s rarely need new ABS control units. If the ABS engages at slow speeds on flat dry surfaces (no wheel slip), it's most likely in need of the wiring cure and it's too detailed to describe the 12 page paper SB here. It was an old paper SB, not current in VEN.

        What year? S70 1998

        Frank,

I have a 1998 S70 and just received a new ABS Controller via mail order yesterday. How difficult would this be to replace myself? I'm somewhat proficient working on cars, but not bleeding brakes if that's required.

What will happen to the old unit once I return it to Houston Volvo? Other than a $50 core charge refund!

        Thanks!

Maybe you could re-issue this as a top-level post so more people might see it.

I've discussed this many times before here over the years. It's too bad that there's no FAQ for AWD/FWD cars but that'd require time and effort that apparently no one wants to do.
The '96 ABS SB is a job for a dealer tech (or anyone else) who has access to that specific SB as it shows the wires and exact location that need repairing. I can't just tell anyone which 4 wires and make it easy enough to repair for anyone here as they're under the fusebox which must be unscrewed and lifted upwards to gain access and there's many wires there. The old SBs called "'96 850 ABS diagnostics". Most of these were cured years ago but I still do one on rare occasion that wasn't problematic before.

If you had a copy for the 96 SB (see a response to my post "I went to school in Iowa" in this thread) I could at least post it to a website. Or maybe you could convince Volvospeed to update their ABS/TRACS information.

Being that I work for a dealership, I'm not sure if VCNA would take kindly to me copying and sending out their SBs and TNNs if it's not now publically available by them otherwise and I'm not about to test VCNA either. In a remote way, I work for those guys and need them to be on my side.
At least one of the guys at Volvospeed (Bay13) is also a Volvo dealer tech and I'm sure that he's also aware of the bulletin, has access to it as well. It's simply not up to me to go around asking others to post info at their sites, especially if he might get himself in any trouble with VCNA people who are aware of his sites existance.

Seems to me Volvospeed can document effective ABS repairs the DIY crowd can perform....without quoting or paraphrasing the TSB. Simply by making the repair, adding their own trademark photodocumentation, and writing up the procedure from scratch would keep them clear of copyright issues. I can't believe this would run afoul of VCNA....after all, they're already documenting repairs that dealers also make.

The guys at Volvospeed like more personal involvement than I do and being that I'm here for free on my own time, I choose to help out a bit but not get as personal or involved as they do and that's my choice. I prefer to post here anonomously (no real name or e-mail) and IMHO, I have my good reasons to do so. In my many years as a tech and being online in forums, I've never been in any courtroom or legal situation and I plan to keep it that way, not everyone's so lucky. I have heard rumors about some who've been in legal situations as a result of things said or posted online so I'm carefull to make sure that I'll never be a part of that and I'm unaware of any way I can post SBs or TNNs w/o it being traced back to me as my webspace would definately be traceable to anyone PC savy.
My whole point with discussing the ABS SB info above was to inform anyone interested that a cure w/o parts does exist for '96 850s but it's not so simple that everyone reading it (IF posted) would be able to do it correctly w/o possible bad consequences.

I went to school in Iowa. 850

Where do you live? I went to Drake in Des Moines (pronounced by the townies Death Moans in the dead of winter). Classmates came from Mason City, Ames, Marshalltown, Nevada (pr. Ne-VAY-da), Indianola...and What Cheer. A beautiful state.

Trivia: in a recent poll, respondents were asked to name the states of the midwest. Only one state was named on EVERY ballot: Iowa.

I went to school in Iowa. 850 1996

I've taken my 96 850 to the dealer twice for ABS/TRACS lights. The first time they cleaned one of the rear wheel sensors. Of course it came back on, and the next time i brought it in, they tell me i need a whole new unit. Is it possible they overlooked the wiring bulletin or what?!?? This is a brand-new (moved) Volvo dealership in N.Vancouver, BC. Does anyone have a price-figure for the wiring fix on '96 850's?

BTW, the light goes on at low speeds, usually starting off then going on, or starting on then going off in the first few minutes of a trip.

The ABS system self-tests when the car first gets going. If it 'fails' the test, the light comes on until the ignition is switched off.

If only Frank (or someone, anyone, Volvospeed) could post a copy of the SB. If I had a copy of it, I could at least post it on a website.
