Compressor temperature sensor 850 1996

I didn't want to attach this to the original thread as it's a couple of days old and getting buried. There appears to be something of a concensus that the A/C compressor temperature sensor is responsible for a condition where cooling is intermittently suspended in hot weather. I'm beginning to experience this problem. Reference is made to bypassing this sensor as a means of diagnosis, but what is the bottom line? Replace sensor or whole compressor? (which?) Cost of part? Ease of replacement? Location of sensor on compressor? It's going to be hot for a while yet.

Thanks in advance.

    speedd and moregolf,

The suggestion to bypass the sensor is designed only as a diagnostic, not a permanent fix. I already know the problem is not low freon. In fact, bypassing the sensor results in constant cooling, indicating that the sensor is faulty - I did find it and the bypass is easy to effect. The question now is - does the sensor sit in the pressure stream or can it be replaced without dumping the refrigerant?

I don't think it would be prudent to remove it. It is a protection device for the compressor. That sounds like you may be low on refrigerant. That was my case. Now it cycles properly... With a evac and recharge.

I have evacuated and recharged my a/c, checked DLCs and the problems still exists. This appears to be beyond the low on refrigerant fix. I know the value added if I bypass the system but what are my tradeoffs? How will my compressor suffer if I bypass it?
