1995 850 turbo questions 850 1995

Hey guys,

Heard back from my dealership on the repairs boy it is a lot!! Glad I don't have to pay for this:

Vacuum Leak, most likely intake nipple they say.
Turbochrager control valve
"may need cat. converter"
Left side control arm is worn out
Right side control arm boot is torn
Cv joints
stabilizer links are loose
serpentine belt replacement (dry and cracking)
then oil leaks: rear main, turbo return line, crank sensor seal, front engine seal

That is it. Pretty hefty amount of work, luckily like I said I don't have to pay for it. But my question is, will the car be safe in the future of more damage from these problems that may lead to others?

If not, I will just sell it and be able to say I put such and such amount of money into it, plus I got the car way below book price.

- Jay

You didn't say how many miles on the car, but it's probably over 70K? Many of these are known wear items on any car with substantial mileage. I just wonder about the main seals and the turbo control valve....these seem a little unusual. Some of these line items are cheap (stabilizer endlinks, turbo return line). Some will no doubt be over-repaired (cv joints). The cat converter you can probably ignore until inspection time.

Did you have any of this work priced at an independent Volvo tech?

Sorry forgot to mention it has 79k on it. Well the work will be done there at the volvo dealership because it has to be done at volvo dealer in order for the insurance to cover me. (whole weird thing). Anyhow, the Cat Converter I will probably have them do just because why not if I am not going to pay for it. Yeah I figured some of things were normal, but the main seals aren't but I've seen a rear main seal go in the same car with 58k (from florida) and my car is from south carolina maybe a down south thing :)

Ask them to check the crankcase ventilation system. Crankcase pressure can blow the main seals early.

Alright, I will ask. But you think it would be safe to continue on with this car? Since it is in a new owner's hands, that will be treating whatever car I own with the most care possible.

The car's fine, and you have low mileage, safety hasn't been compromised...in fact, some safety has been restored. The core safety elements like the roll cage, brakes, airbags, etc. are all intact. It really comes down to whether you feel a need to update your ride to a later model.

The thing about European cars - they like to be tinkered with, not like Japanese cars that are so reliable (and so boring) one wonders why they even have a hood. Eurocars a much more fun to drive than Japanese (and most American) models, but that fun factor means that certain components are pushed closer to the edges of the engineering envelope.

Yeah, it sure is boring driving my GS-430. Goes fast, stops on a dime, no brake dust, no torque steer, and never wants to visit the dealership. Just plain boring! However, I can depend on my 850 to come through whenever I get the urge to donate money to a shop.

I would guess Yes. Unless it's been abused. Typically, Americans ( I am one) don't do a lot of preventative maint. I learned early in life with a Mercedes. Every time I have bought a European car, I always expect to pay $1,000 to $2,000 to get it perfect. Then at least I know exactly where the car is as far as condition. But also when I sell them, I get top dollar for them. I do keep good records. Just a thought.
