Assistance for Code 3-1-3 (PNP Switch) & Transm Dipstick O-ring 850 1994

Dear Group,
We had our first 50 degree night and our 1994 850 wagon lurched and jump in to third gear with the flashing arrow. The only code recorded was 313 and my handy Volvo pocket guide (a great investment) shows PNP switch. This is the second occurrence after clearing the code and rapidly moving the shifter back and forth.

My question is directed to the members who have replaced their own switches. I have reviewed in great detail my Haynes manual and the Volvo Speed Web Site. Is there any additional advice or tips not covered by these two sources? Such as tips for aligning the new switch, where to mark reference points prior to removing the old switch, and the amount of torque for the center nut.

Is there an newer version of the PNP switch that I need to be aware of before ordering?

I also need tips and help to replace the transmission dipstick o-ring.

Thank you,

Robert

Thank you for the responses. I will order the tool with the PNP switch. Seems the tool will save from later headaches. I have printed out the Volvospeed directions and will tear into the replacement next week.

There's a Volvo tool that properly aligns the new PNP switch but I'm sure it can be done w/o that tool, might require some trial and error however.

As for the trans dipstick, IF you're carefull and just move the top of the dipsticks bracket aside (w/o pulling it upwards), it doesn't come out of the hole and you won't need to replace that o-ring. I never do.
Do make sure that the dipstick is properly seated and doesn't leak when you're done.

      Dear Glen,
Thank you for your reponse. My transmission dipstick oring currently leaks transmission fluid. The fluid runs down and drips off the front transmission cover. I thought now is time to replace the oring. I am not sure how the oring is mounted on the dipstick tube or how the oring is to be replace. I know ther is a gotcha on my 745 the that you are not to pull on the oil tube when replacing the breather box oring or the tube drops into the oil pan.

It's easy. Just remove the upper nut and that tube comes out with the o-ring.

The PNP switch is a piece of cake. Go to Volvospeed.com and print up the instructions (with pictures). Hold the instructions in one hand and a wrench in the other and before you know it you're done. Allow yourself an afternoon so you don't get stressed by a deadline. You can make your own alignment tool, use a voltmeter or a small striaght edge, whatever. The dipsick O rings can be repalced at the same time as the PNP switch.

I purchased the alignment tool from Boston Volvo, all of about $20.00. I figure if I was spending $150.00 for the switch, I might as well by the tool. My 850 has been eating the PNP switches at the rate of one every 35,000 miles. The car currently has 76,000 on it and is working on the next switch. In a few years I figure I will need the tool again.

I also replaced the ignition switch after doing the latest PNP switch. The car would not always start withou jiggling the key. This procedure is outlined on Bay 13 as well.
