Belive it or not, I'm sure that the dealer you have in mind probably wants to have you as a regular customer.

Sure, doing everything IS expensive, If you do not want to do EVERYTHING, what part of your car do you want to neglect?

    Rick850R is spot on.

Even if you do the work yourself, you should do everything.

Has the belt been changed recently? Looks like it is time if not. That's about $300.

If there is a sticker in the engine compartment when the last belt was changed, it should read 70,000 miles. Give or take a few miles. If you cannot find the sticker, or if proof does not exsist in the maintenance book, then ask the previous owner. If he cannot verify the repair, get the car into a shop and get replaced ASAP! It's a terribly expensive repair if the belt breaks.

It needs replacing at 70,000 mile intervals.

You can go to sites to find out what you should do at each service interval. The Volvo America site has information, as does cars.com (the "Car Talk" section, I believe), and edmunds.com and probably a couple of other sites. Edmunds actually estimates the cost of each service, with a breakdown of what procedure will cost how much.

Good luck. And pay attention to any abnormality (for example, a need to replace something long before the scheduled maintenance).

Either find a reputable dealer, garage, or do it yourself.

The first thing you need to do is establish yourself with an honest independant mechanic, they like the cars and will let you know what has to be done now and what can wait, besides this they will charge you much less than the dealer which you will eventually have to sign over everything you own to keep the car running well.
