Check Engine Light V70-XC70

Anyone any ideas why the"check engine light" comes on. Volvo in Gotenburg could not fix it. The Volvo dealer has tried unsuccesfully to fix it for 3 years. All I know is that it probably has something to do with the filler cap for the gas tank

My V70 (98) CEL came on soon after being reset by dealer for £40. Lasted 2 days came back on I cleaned throttle intake myself I only removed the Intake hose between throttle and filter box also found two small pilot holes (5'oclock positon) both were blocked reset light by disconnecting battery Negative lead has been OK and CEL off 4 wks. cost nothing took 30 mins

The CE light comes on for any fault in the emissions system. There must be a dozen or more reasons - EGR components, air pump (a/k/a smog pump), bad O2 sensors...
