Care to REPORT Passenger Airbag or Broken Horn to NHTSA? 850

Yes, I've had this same problem w/ the air bag cover. We have three Volvo's: a 244 (>300,000 miles) and two 1995 854's. For some reason, this air bag issue is among the most irritating of any problems w/ the 3 Volvo's.

Because of the HUGE force that deploys an air bag, people often get pretty roughed up in the face during an accident (small price to pay, I know). My point is that a little glue is not going to stop that explosion. I do LOVE the double-sided tape idea -- even safer than the glue and very reversible and/or forgiving (eg, compared to glue spilling on the dashboard, etc).

If you would like to register a complaint w/ the air bag (if you believe that is a safety issue due, for example, to backyard fix-it projects), feel free to do so. It's very quick to report and may be the one that triggers a "free fix."

I did so w/ a broken horn on 850 when I learned how many brickboard readers have experienced the same exact thing.

Passenger airbag 'turning up'.... Repair 850

If you look under the flexible cover you will see a metal cover. I think that when the air bag deploys this metal cover is pushed forward and the air bag deploys toward the pasenger.

The problem with the flexible cover is that the foam backing falls apart.

You can glue the flexible cover to the metal cover with just about anything that does not interfere with the deployment of the metal cover. Super glue might wick into the groove between the metal cover and its surround, interfering with the cover's deployment.

I used double sided foam tape. The first time I tried it it did not work because more of the foam backing came apart. The second time, I removed all the foam from the corner and the double sided tape now holds well.

Bay 13 at Volvospeed suggests that you can glue the flexible cover down with anything that does not interfere with the steel cover.

Volvo sells a repair kit, but because the repair must adhere to Volvo standards, it costs "Volvo dollars". (Which is usually $100 or more!)
