Two things - accelerator sticks and the KEY WON'T COME OUT! V70-XC70 1998

Hello All -

I want to love my Volvo, I really do, but the truth is it has been fraught with problems since we bought it last year. I won't get into the vaccuum leaks, O2 sensor saga, but I would love some insight into the current issues.

1. The accelerator is hard to depress. You have to really press on it, making it sort of surge forward, until it seems to warm up (even though it's 90 degrees here in the Georgia summer).

2. On the gearshift (automatic) when you put the car in park, the "button" on the front is staying depressed which means that you cannot get the key out. You have to jiggle the gearshift until the button pops out. Any ideas? Is this going to cost me another $500?

Thanks so much.

The throttle body cuold be dirty causing the throttle to stick
near the closing position. A lot of gunk can build up in there and
they should be cleaned annually. To clean:

You remove the cold air intake hose to the air filter
(it pops out); remove the black cover over the throttle (a torx
screw as I recall); remove the intake hose to the throttle body
by taking off a couple of clamps and then you can see the throttle.
I've cleaned mine out using a rag and rubbing alcohol (others use
    stronger solvents).

The ignition switch is a problem prone area. http://volvospeed.com/bay13.htm
has replacement instructions if you have to replace it. Volvo also
has a "cmpaign" for the switch if the car won't start (not your problem,
though). In a campaign, they replace the parts for free if you complaign
about it. The campaign applies to 98s with serial number ranges:

    874471590-490221 874476745-490980
    875416734-435703
    876416734-435703

(The campaign issue is from alldatadiy.com which lists recalls,
    service bulletins and campaigns.)

I think it worked! I really appreciate the "talk through." I was able to figure it out on my own, which is great. It was definitely crusty in there.

My wifes '98 V70 was having a problem with the automatic shift button sticking as well. I squirted the tiniest amount of WD40 on both sides of the button (as it slides into the shift lever), and it works fine. My guess is that the button is "spring loaded" and that the springs somehow distort the shape of the button causing it stick. Decreasing the friction has helped.

Can't help you on the accelerator.

    Good luck.
