I suspect it's the cable but I can't seem to find the website that shows how to fix this problem. I hope it's not too complicated.

Has anyone had it repaired by a mechanic? How much does it cost?

Mine went out also. I need to repair it. How hard was yours to fix? Did the motor still grind or was there just a clicking noise?

I had the same problem and I use the following site to fix the seat back cable,
except I did not buy a new cable rather I used the old one. All you need is to cut a little bit of the plastic sleeve from the end of the cable which turns the gear and reinsert the cable. This will work just fine and you don't have to spend a lot of money.

I just did this repair two weeks ago. Part was about $35 from
volvoparts.com. Took about 90 minutes. I use cable ties to
put it back together. I thought the repair was a bit tricky but
the seat's motor arrangement was the second type described in the
Bay13 site and it took a bit of wrangling to get at it.

I couldn't cut the hog rings with my diagonal cutters. I just pried them open and took them out. I used zip ties instead of hog rings to put it back together. Much easier, I thought.

I did it myself, about $45 for the cable, and 2 hours. Some have said they did in an hour and a half. I saw another post a while back where someone had it repaired at the dealer. I think that they said it was about $150. A search back through old posts would probably find it, or someone may reply.

volvospeed.com has instructions in their bay 13 section. mine is broken too, but thankfully in the up position--will wait until a little cooler weather to attempt, but the instructions look pretty good.
