T6 smoked by V70 T5 ?! S80

Hi,
I was feeling that my T6 was not up to par powerwise so I went head to head with my friend who has a 1998 V70 T5. From a dead start I jump 2 feet in front on the first gear and in 2nd gear the V70 T5 pulls ahead AT LEAST a car lenght in front and then keeps pulling away. My car feels really sluggish at high RPMs. Any ideas why?
268hp VS 236hp I should AT LEAST be side by side with the T5?

I've had a message on the dash that says "Antipollution entretient requis" which means something like .. service needed for anti-pollution. The message is accompanied by the Lambda sign (which could mean 100 things) Could this have anything to do with the apparent lack of power?

Thanks

Wow....that's weird. My T6 is a rocket. My previous car was a Corvette, so I know fast. My T6 pins you to your seat. I love it. It's crazy. When the turbo kicks in it's like an afterburner. If I hold the car with the brake and bring up the RPMs to 1200 at a stop light, when I release the brakes, all hell breaks loose and I usually leave people in a cloud of white tire smoke. Nobody expects this from a Volvo. It's great. The ultimate stealth car as far as the traffic cops know. I've done nothing special to the car other than a K&N Air Filter, Synthetic Oil everywhere, Denso Iridium Plugs and I use premium fuel. I haven't even chipped the car yet....I can just imagine when I do.

There must be something wrong with your O2 sensors or something clogged up with Carbon. That's just not right. Get some Valvoline Synth or STP injector cleaner and put it in when you're at 1/2 tank of gas... drive the car around like a bat out of hell for a bit and see if the ECM reprograms itself to a more aggressive setting while the injectors get clean.

Here's another reason S80

T-5's have the high pressure turbo, which is just getting cranked at the moment the LPTs in the T6 have expended themselves, leaving the bigger engine pretty much on it's own.

Among the less obvious, and less probable, causes: the adaptive transmission. Have you been lead footing it a lot in the S80? If not, there's a possible explanation for why your S80 doesn't feel as fast as it has in the past.

I have a '99 S80 T6 and I bought an '01 V70 T5 for the Mrs. I hit WOT at most stop lights if I'm at the front of the line :). I can tell you that my T6 won't loose to any stock V70 T5 (at the possible long-term expense of my tranny?) I can also tell you that if I get in my car after being on the road (out of town without my car) and my wife has been driving it (or if I step into her car) it takes several miles of aggressive acceleration to wipe the scowl off my face because my wife drives like a sane person and the transmission tends to revert back towards an economy setting.

A one-time acceleration match against a V70 T5 won't help your acceleration issue if it is the adaptive transmission. Take your car out for 10 - 15 miles or more of mixed setting driving and use quick acceleration to the speed limits where you can do so safely. See if your car doesn't get progressively quicker and quicker after several miles.

Good luck.

In addition to the weight difference, the S70 has more of it over the
front end so it may have a traction advantage. I have a 98 T5M and
traction in first and second gear is pretty much the limiting factor
for acceleration. Tires might make a difference, too. I no
longer have the OEM tires and the Bridgestones I have now grip better
and do seem to aid acceleration a bit.

It's also a matter of pounds (or kilograms) S80

Road and track reported a 0-100 mph time of 17.6 seconds and a SS 1/4 mile of 15.0 @ 93.4 mph for the 3690 pound S80 T6, vs. a 0-100 time of 15.7 seconds and a SS 1/4 mile of 14.7 @ 97 mph for the 3280 pound old style S70 T5. Add a little for the extra weight of the wagon configuration, but the V70 T5 should still be a little bit faster.

Would check out the ""Antipollution entretient requis". It can't hurt.

I'd think something was wrong if my car started speaking to me in French.
