Automatic dimming rear view mirror - Do these things really work? S80

I have an automatic dimming rear view mirror on my 2001 S80 2.9. But it does not seem to work. There is no noticeable dimming that occurs at night, like a traditional rear view mirror with a manual lever. Headlights behind me look just the same as with a regular mirror, leading to eye fatigue and uncomfortable driving.

The local Volvo dealer checked it out on their computer system and found no error codes. But then again, when the service manager shined a flashlight directly into the sensor, he could not see any dimming happening either.

Anyone else experience the same thing? Does your automatic dimming rear view mirror really work? Can anyone lend any helpful info?

    Auto dimming mirror was not standard on the 2001 S80 2.9 . So, unless you purchased that option and had the necessary software, your mirror will not dim automatically. The actual mirror is installed but the software needs to be downloaded. The T6 models have that mirror standard.

    we have one and it does work--I noticed it when I drove it home that night. The mirror looked dark and then in daylight it looked normal. maybe you should take it back to them and tell them this thing doesn't work............I would..........

    The auto dim feature is adjustable at the dealer. Ask them to adjust it.
    Use these words: VADIS, vehicle communication, UEM(upper electronic module) program control module. Try it>

    we have the auto dimming on our c36 and caddi...it should be noticeably less bright than normal...
