Do K&N Air Filters actually increase the 850's Horsepower? If so, by how much would you say. Thanks

Hello there, Let me give you some food for thought.
I have a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT Sedan and have been using the Amsoil Product throughout the entire vehicle. I originally started using the product about 2 years ago in my 4 WD vehicle and was impressed with the results. Now I even sell the Amsoil Products.
The Amsoil Synthetic products out perform all synthetics, sythetic blends and regular base motor oils that are currently on the market.
Info about air filters(types):
Paper air filters: (all major brands)
1. Automotive filter paer, which surface-traps debris, starts with good air flow and adequate filtering capacity. As they age and become obstructed with depris, their filtering efficiency increase and their air flow capacity decreases. As air flow capacity decreases, engine performance declines.
2. Paper filters wear and tear; holes allow excessive dirt to pass into the engine.
3. Paper filters are single use products.
Amsoil Air filters:
Amsoil air filters contain reusable oil-wetted foam filter elements. They provide substantially greater air flow and greater dirt stoppage than paper filters provide. Greater air flow promotes mote complete combustion which enhances power output and enhances fuel efficiency in older, non-computer monitored vehicles.
1. The thick foam elements in Amsoil air filters contain twisted but spacious passageways. Air rushes through the porous foam, while the complex of tunnels obstructs debris particles. Tack oil holds debris to the filter so it cannot circulate once trapped. The tack oil also aids in the trapping of particles smaller than 5 microns.
2. Soft filter foam 'gives' easily, resisting tearing.
3. The foam filter elements may be removed, washes with household detergent, rinsed, dried, reoiled with the Amsoil foam filter oil and reinstalled in the vehicle. The filter foams may be reused for years as long as they remain undamaged. Plus, due to the thickness of the foam elements, Amsoil air filters may be used for longer intervals between cleanings than paper filters may be used between replacements.
It's worth the look and the investment. If your interested in learning more I'll be glad to help you out and that goes for anyone else as well. Give me an email at rpiescik@attbi.com.
Talk to you soon.

Regarding how K & N's work vs. oiled surface or paper filters go to the K & N website, http://knfilter.com/facts.htm#MYTHS

Another effect of a K&N on a turbo car...
I noticed and immediate and dramatic increase in how quickly the boost built in my 92 eagle Talon after I added a K&N. Admittedly though, I was replacing a filter that was probably dirty.
I dont remember a dramatic SOTP result, but the boost definitely built quicker. which makes sense. BTW, my talon had 10.5 psi stock boost.

Compared to a dirty paper filter it will make a big difference. Maybe 6-10 hp if the paper filter is really dirty.
Compared to a new paper filter it won't make any noticible difference except to your opinion of the car. You can't feel a 1-2 hp increase.

I think Volvo engineers have "taken" all the easy horsepower.
In recent years, they added variable valve timing, multiple
coils, bumped the boost, and added 5 speed automatics (even made
the 5 speed available first on non-turbos so they were faster off
the line).
If the air filter could make any major difference (without sacrificing
engine life) then they would have "taken" it since that is cheap compared
to the other things Volvo has done to improve performance.

Well, think about it. Fuel injected engines measure the incoming air, then release enough fuel to burn properly.
If the air filter flows more air, you may see a bit of performance increase at full throttle, but probably not enough to measure in normal driving.
If interested, go to "bobistheoilguy.com" and poke around. There is a fellow on there who works for an oil company and says he can generally tell by the oil analysis reports who has a K&N filter on--more ingested dirt!
AMSOIL makes a drop-in filter for many applications which passes as much air as the K&N, much less dirt, generally costs much less.

Dick~
So basically you're saying that people with the K&N air filter will be letting dirt into their engines?

Basically I'm saying that the K&N will let at least as much dirt through as any of the paper filters, and more than some.
|
|

Its as easy as 2 + 2.....the less restrictive a air filter element is....the more air....AND the bigger the dirt particles will be, and that = MORE DIRT.
Just the way it is....there is no FREE lunch!

Steve, I disagree.
I think that there is a way that there can be a free lunch here and I always assumed that K&N and the other hi perf filters did it this way...
if you keep the size of the hole the same, but increase the SURFACE AREA of the filter, then you obviously can increase overall flow without increasing the size of the dirt particulate that makes it thru.
K&N filters are ribbed and so this is how I assumed they did it, (while still fitting in the footprint of a paper filter).
Obviously, my theories are suspect if the study that was mentioned does indeed show that K&N's let more dirt in.

An AMSOIL air filter will keep out more small particles and pass more air than the others. Not a free lunch, but probably costs less than a K&N.

Actually, I believe they all let some dirt in. You may want to check the performance graph on the Amsoil site. Not sure you can believe it all but who knows.

I put a K&N in my '93 N/A, and now it's in my '96 Turbo. I'd really like to think it makes a difference, but I sure as heck can't tell the difference... maybe if you compare it to a clogged OEM filter it has better flow!

I added the K&N air filter to my 850 Turbo and I'd say it's good for 6-8 HP max. I definately noticed a little more top end power and increased throttle response, and it also makes an awesome sucking sound from the intake.

Steve~
If I hadn't of felt a slight increase in power than I'd say 5hp or less, but the question was, "how much power do you feel you gained", and my answer stays at 6-8 HP. He wanted our guesstimate, so I gave it to him. I've also heard the increase varies between turbo and N/A engines, with the K&N offering a little more power to the turbo engines.
