preparing a car for outdoor storage 850

i am going to store my vehicle while i am away at work, until around november or december. i have bought a car cover, and am planning to use jack stands on all four corners. I also plan to disconnect the battery. Should i use fuel additives to keep the gasoline from going "bad"? is there anything else i should do to the car?

I would skip the car cover also. A coat of wax might do better.

Will the car be parked on pavement? If not, I would lay dovn a tarp or a thick sheet of plastic to keep moisture from rising under the car.

Perhaps you should get some reflective plastic sheeting and install it on the outside of your windows. Even a messy job should do the trick. I do not know about reflective sheeting, but I did see some reusable tinted sheeting at Home Depot this week.

We had a mouse nest above the hood liner of a car we are driving, and we have three cats!

You might want to reconsider use of a car cover. They are OK to keep dust off, however, they can do more damage then just leaving the car out in the rain.

As in any cover, ie car bars, if water gets under it (and they all leak or condense h2o, the water in uneven and constant contact will 'stain' the exterior. I don't recall the scientific reason, but if you look at car bra instructions they say to remove & dry if they get wet.

If in sunny climate perhaps window shades better idea to keep sun off interior.

As for other items...

1. Disconnect battery - good idea, have radio code handy. Maybe even remove radio to safe location if you don't have one. Why temp someone to break windows?

2. I agree with Phil - mice love used cars. Moth balls smell better then mouse droppings in heater duct and they like engine compartment insulation! The moth ball smell goes away, but the mouse smell...

3. Store with full tank. Water condenses in porportion to air in tank. For a couple months I wouldn't worry about additives.

4. Store with fresh oil - oil degrades with time not just miles.

Generally speaking I don't think a couple months a big deal, over 4 or 5 months you might do more.

Finally, another option - leave with a friend who can start up and run a bit while you are gone. Just ask on the forum, I'm sure you'll get offers!

I'm sure others can add things, but I'd worry most about rodents nesting. Put a clump of steel wool in the exhaust pipe, duct tape or cover the air intakes, open a box of moth balls in the interior (they LOVE to eat leather seats!). Also consider placing the car on jsck stands so the tires don't flat spot. Wouldn't worry about the fuel for such a short storage time, but really, you don't want a family of mice to build a nest in your squirrel cage blower.....

I've had mice FILL the engine shroud of an air-cooled motor with seeds......
