Rear pad installation S40-V40

My S40 needs rear pads again. Second set in 40k miles.

When installing rear pads, I've been told that a special tool is required. Would someone be kind enough to elaborate? Where would I get the tool and can I improvise? Any installation tricks would be welcome.

Thanks!

Thanks to all for your help. I am waiting for my pads to arrive.

Earl-This time around, I ordered Mintex pads for the front and rear. It's supposed to dust less and some say stop better. I'll put em on and see for myself.

Has anyone else installed Mintex pads? If so, what do you think of them?

      Typer,

I just installed the mintex pads yesterday (front). They seem to work fine. I have to wait a couple miles to break them in befor really putting them to the test, but they worked as well as the Volvo ones in the rain yesterday.

Also. To those who say the volvo tool works great, where can you order it from?

        Peter:

I was just wondering how your Mintex pads were working out for you.

I just got off the phone with a Volvo technician from our dealer and he recommended that I only use Volvo brake pads. I guess that I should have expected that BUT he said that any other pad will likely make metallic screeching sounds because the Volvo pad is fitted perfectly for the calipers/pistons?

Are you getting any sounds from your Mintex pads? Also, where can I find intructions on how to change the pads myself. I don't want to screw anything up but I really don't want to pay $60-70 to have Volvo do it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
        Thanks.

        Mark

          Hi Mark,

The Mintex work wonderfully. No noise and it seems to have better stopping power then the Volvo pads. The base of the pad is designed almost exactly like the Volvo pad and fits perfectly into the caliper with no problem. The springs are even stronger on the Mintex then the volvo so you should have no rattling at all. When I took the volvo pads off two of the caliper springs that prevent rattling were bent on the pads so I was not impressed with that.

The Mintex have lived up to their words and produce less break dust then the Volvo ones and have a gaurentee of up to 15,000 miles. I definitely suggest switching over. They sell them at IPD. I only replaced the front pads as the rear ones didn't need to be replaced yet.

Another thing to think of when replacing your pads that really helps if you don't do it already is to really scrub down your wheels when they are off the car and when they are clean take a carnuba based paste wax for your car and wax them (if they are the painted alloy type). This will keep the break dust from collecting on the rims and when they do get dirty you can just hose them off most of the time. Just wax them like you would your car.

As far as how to replace your pads, have you ever replaced breaks on a car before? If you haven't I will give you more detailed instructions. If you have, you just replace the front ones like you would any other cars disc brakes and I can just send you the torque settings for the brakes. The rear ones are a little more tricky. They require a special tool I believe you can order through volvo. This tool is also used on other brands of cars so you might be able to get it or rent it from an auto supply store like trak auto or NAPA.

Let me know which instructions you would like and I will let you know accordingly.

            Peter:

Sorry that I forgot to post this on the site. Thanks for replying so quickly.

Unfortunately and ashamed to say, I have never replaced brake pads before. This is my wife's car and I'm trying to learn how to do some of this stuff myself. I will take your advice on the waxing of the wheels. That sounds like a great idea.

I can check around some Advance Auto Parts or NAPA to see if I can find one of those tools. I just have no idea where to start with the actual install itself. Details would be wonderful and I really appreciate your time.

I did find the IPD site with the pads listed for $28.80. That's the cheapest that I've seen them. When I went through the process to order them, they charged $1.75 for handling but $0 for shipping. Is that correct, FREE shipping? That would be great! I'm just waiting to make sure that I can do this before I order them.

Thanks again for taking the time and effort to respond to my cluelessness.

I paid $54.45 for the front and rear Mintex pads and a Mann oil filter (free shipping over $50) at http://www.autohausaz.com. The fronts were $22.15 and rears $45.81. These were for the "red box" Mintex pads. Their service was good and shipping prompt. I fealt like I got a good deal.

Get the latest OEM rear pads as they've been re-designed and go an extra step yet by taking them to a grinder and "carefully" grinding the outer metal edges slighly where it slides in the calipers so that they're not tight when you install them in place. They should move easily in the calipers or they'll rust in place prematurely again. The X40s problem with premature wear is due to that clearance being too tight and the rear pads rust in place, wearing one side prematurely. The same problem occurs with 850s, X70s rear pads...they rust in place. After removing a little metal, coat the edges with anti-sieze.
Now, do NOT use a C-clamp trying to force the pistons back in as they're threaded and need to be TURNED under slight pressure. The Volvo tool works great (very easy too) but I do know that other car makes use a similar design caliper and tools to do it can be found elsewhere, perhaps a local parts store?

As stated... the rear caliper must be rotated as it is compressed. It's very easy when you have the correct tool. Other car makers to this as well, so the tool is not Volvo specific. Try getting the tool from an auto parts store... they usually rent them for cheap/free!

If all else fails, you could use a good ol'fashioned c-clamp... it's a pain in the butt .. but it does the job. You have to 'compress' the caliper with the c clamp a little, then 'back it off', 'twist' the caliper a little, then 'compress' ... 'back it off'... 'twist'... over and over.

    Good luck!

    -Andrew

      that's a pretty good explanation!!
      thanks

one question though, how much compression between screwing, 1/4 inch? 1/8 1nch? 1/16 inch? just wondering!!

The caliper piston screws clockwise while being pushed back.

From the UK Haynes manual: "In the absence of the special tool, the piston can be screwed back into the rear caliper using a pair of circlip pliers".

I have just put pads on my V40 and tried the Haynes method. Totally useless and so invested in a tool from Halfords intended for VWs and Fords which worked perfectly.

Anyone now why they designed them like this?

I just change the rear pad with a tool rented from Autozone. It comes with adaptors for different type brake system. It works great!
