EVAP canister 850 1994

I looked under my left front bumper today and saw two vacuum hoses hanging down.
It appears to be from the EVAP canister which is no longer there though the plastic strap is. I have no idea what happened to it or how long it has been gone.
The car runs great and there is no check engine light and I did not smell gasoline. Maybe it isnt the EVAP canister that is missing.
The Haynes manual describes a replacement proceedure but the Chilton manual says dont mess with it???

I plan to replace it as soon as possible but I'm baffled why it doesnt affect the performance or turn on some annoying light somewhere.

Anyone have any thoughts
Thanks
Steve

The canisters function is to capture and later burn evaporative hydrocarbons from the fuel tank. It will have no affect on performance, and will not be detected by the OBD system on earlier models. Starting in 96, the canister/evap system is monitored for leakage and will set a check engine light. Missing canister can cause emission failure during the visual equipment portion of the test.

missing 'charcoal canister' 850 1994

That'd be your now missing charcoal canistor and it really should be re-installed ASAP. I'd advise trying to locate a used one as it's probably not cheap new. It's usually held in place by a metal, adjustable bracket (not a plastic tie-strap) so if it was previously held there by a plastic strap, the front corner of that car was probably previously damaged and someone rigged it that way which obviously didn't work too well.
