98 V70T5 ABS/Tracs light intermittently go on/off after getting new tires.

Just a coincidence? Never happened before (except when getting an emissions inspection). Then driving home from getting new tires. Comes on. Then goes off. Few days later same thing. Just drove down to FL from MA, and it happened twice along the trip. What should I look for/expect?

thanks
pat

How many miles on the car? ABS/TRACS controller failure can take place around 70K miles. But given a tire change, it would be wise to check first for ABS sensor or circuit problem first.

Check out the maintenance section (Bay 13) of Volvospeed. There's a good technical description of the ABS/TRACS system.

are you saying there are many owners experiencing failure of this component around 70k? how much? Is it just a plug and swap?

I've read up at volvospeed. So if the light is on, is ABS actually disabled by the computer or could I still do my own test to see if the wheels lock up?

What should I look for on the sensor?

      thanks

ABS/TRACS controller failure is a known problem. I can't believe there hasn't been a recall because of its frequency of occurrence in 850/70s. (The 99 and 00 SVC70's have a different system, I believe.)

The TRACS program is dependent on ABS, so if ABS goes out, TRACS does too. So it's *possible* that an ABS sensor or circuit was compromised during a wheel change...or it could be that the ABS/TRACS controller coincidentally failed at the same time. When my controller was replaced, the procedure was to inspect ABS sensors and circuitry first, as that possibility had to be eliminated as a source of failure. They did that with a scanner.

If the ABS light is on, you have normal brakes. They will no doubt lock up.

So is this a 'possible' defect in the part that checks the system or the system itself? Right now my light is off. It's off 99.9% of the time. However, is it possible that at some point I may need the ABS and then it will fail to work? Or does the light just go on because of a bad circuit in the system that checks to make sure the ABS brakes are working. The closest volvo dealer is an hour away. I'll take the tires off and inspect. Anything I should look for? Can an advanced DIYr replace the module? Are the new modules any different or should I expect that to fail to within the next 70k?

          thanks

I would have whoever did the tires inspect the ABS sensors to make sure they didn't clog them up with something. After that, you can trace the connections to be sure they look clean and intact. I expect you CAN change the ABS module, check out the maintenance section of volvospeed.com for guidance.

When you first start out with the car, the ABS system is tested automatically. It can flunk the test (turning on the ABS and TRACS lights) for any number of reasons--fouled sensor, bad connection, bad module. In the autumn, I sometimes have a problem with a stray leaf in one of the sensors. (I have seven magnificant 100-year-old maple trees around my house; the landscapers charge me by the ton to haul the leaves away).

Would the ABS system fail in mid skid? I suppose it's possible. Why not take it out to a gravel road, slam on the brakes and test it?

the abs/tracs module on the 850's are always suspect. i dont know if the 70 series use the same module.
once you get abs and tracs lights on, you do not have abs, just regular brakes and yes...they will lock up. the module runs some $400 + install or you can diy, in any case you'll be out at least $400+.
i just replaced mine 2 weeks ago at 78k miles.
        regards
