my friend's 96 850 just retired......

my friend called me last night and told me that he driving ournd the beltway (wash dc area) and his engine caught fire. according to him, he had been having problems with overheating the past 2 weeks. took it to a volvo dealership for fix. problem did not go away. he then took it to an indy at a "shell station". i'm not sure if taking it to the indy is the cause for his mishap but according to him, he saw the guy reading a volvo book while working on the car. i told him that if i ever saw a mechanic reading an instrux book, i would ask for my keys, drive out of there without looking back.
we have the same model, year, and color of 850.
now he wants to know, what next?? can he go after the shop??

    As for shop manuals

As for shop manuals in themselves, even the best factory trained (and/or ASE) master techs use manuals on occasion for specs and fault tracing if it's something that they just don't know from previous experience. Seeing a guy looking at a manual isn't bad in itself and I'd rather see that than think that a person lacking real knowledge or experience is just guessing, replacing parts on a whim.
The best techs don't just know everything as that's impossible these days (maybe 40 yrs ago however when there were about 3 parts under the hood of any car that could fail and you could sometimes just see it too when you opened the hood).
