1993 850 Runs Rich, Stalls 850 1993

My 93 850 stalled at a light a couple of weeks ago & has been getting less than average fuel mileage. Yesterday it stalled again and while it would always restart, it was very difficult to keep running. Engine surges at constant speed and dies when slowing down/stopping. It seems happy only under hard acceleration. Check engine light is on & the car is running very RICH with plenty of black smoke from the exhaust. I think the next step is to read the codes, but which socket to plug into & where can I get a list of the codes? Any advice?

DG

Yep, it's best to read them there codes ASAP! Go to an auto parts store and get/order a Haynes Manual for 850's. It will tell you how to read the codes, and what they mean. You will MOST LIKELY still end up bringing it to a mechanic, though, unless you are very good at diagnosis and have some mechanical experience.

OK. Codes were A2: 1-2-1, A3: 3-1-2, 4-4-3. A2 is for fuel system and code 1-2-1 is mass airflow signal. A3 is for ABS, do not know what the codes mean, but assume it is unrelated to this problem. Pocket Data Book now on order.

Unplugged and cleaned mass airflow sensor connector. Cleared codes. Started car & it seemed fine when cold -- good so far. Moved other cars out of the driveway and drove around the block - feeling good at this point, drove for maybe a minute, then stalled, noticed black smoke & same symptoms as before - not so good. Shut off car and checked codes again. A2: 1-1-1, A3: 3-1-2, 4-4-3. Hmmm...so ruled out mass airflow sensor & now suspect fuel pressure regulator. Makes sense to me, can you think of anything else it might be?

Replaced fuel pressure regulator. Car ran fine during 10 minute test drive. Seems fixed but let's drive it for a couple of weeks before it's considered cured. Will post again if the problem comes back. Thanks for the advice.

Congratulations on the fix. I had thought about the MAF before i read your post and saw that you already checked the MAF.

Fuel pressure Regulator's Damn those things!

Well it didn't stay fixed. Made the mistake of letting the wife take it out before I was sure it was solved. Guess what? Once the car gets good'n hot, same story again. Dies at idle, runs awful (missing) at constant speed, any RPM, but runs just fine under hard acceleration. Lots of black smoke. CHECKED CODES ON A2 1-1-1. I started thinking it could be retarded timing. Next I will replace rotor, cap and wires. Not sure it is the cure but they are overdue anyway since they have gone at least 70,000 miles. John at VPI had similar experience & turned out to be bad coil wire. Appreciate any other thoughts.

Yes i would check the ignition componenets but if they are bad enough to cause it to die at idle then it would probably not accellerate very well under full throttle either.

could your timing belt have slipped a notch? was it replaced at 70K miles?

I would still look into the MAF sensor, have you cleaned the throttle plate? could it be sticking shut at idle causing the car to stall? it could a combination of things. I would pull out the spark plugs and see what they look like.

a week coil could cause the problem.

              Dan.
