Rapid headlight burnouts V70-XC70 2001

Why did volvo make the V70's go through soooo many headlights and tail lights. Our 2001 V70 has gone through 4-5 headlights and 2 tiallights in under a year. Is there any bad connection that is causing this??? What can been done to improve it? Is the dealer the only way to go about getting the daytime running lights turned off?

Rapid headlight burnouts V70-XC70 2001

My 99 V70 GLT burn out headlight once for the last three years. I recently took my V70 to the dealer for a 60K tune-up and they replaced Headlamp kit PN# 274261 per recall type 101B, and they also replaced Bulb Socket PN#8628377 per recall type 101.

I recommended that you take your car to the dealer and let them replace headlight harneses. I hope this info help. Good luck.

There is a service kit (Service Resistor Cable) which should be installed at the headlights, that reduce the voltage from 14V to approx 12V, which prolong the bulbs lifetime.
From M/Y 2002 this resistor is factory fitted on all vehicles.

I don't know about the 2001 model, but on my 2000 V70R there is a little switch beside the headlight switch that can be turned with a mini-screwdriver to shut off the daytime running lights. I did this after burning out a headlight bulb in less than a year. The owner's manual shows how to do it for the 2000.

Rapid headlight burnouts V70-XC70 2001

I suspect the problem is more systemic than daytime use, and is typical of many models of Volvo over the last decade. It's a spot problem on the S80's (more widespread on others, especially 70's) addressed in a post a couple months ago by n0v8or, who works as an engineer in the automotive industry.

Turning off the DRL's might help, but that would still result in 2 or 3 burnouts a year - still excessive. I would suggest a visit to an automotive electric shop where they might be able to tell the real story, and maybe put a resistor into the harness or something.

Just did 3 tail lights and 1 headlight within one week on a 2001 V70 with 28,000 km.

In my car, 22900 miles, I never had a lightbulb problem. Plus, I have had countless 2001 and 2002 demos for the last 2 years (usually driven for about 6 months and/or 6,000 miles) and not a single one (S40s, V40s, V70s, S60, S80s and C70s) has given me aproblem with a lightbulb.

Like any bulb, it has a limited burn life and when they're on all the time, they'll burn out faster than "normal" (those cars with night time only headlamps).
Yes, the only solution to extend your bulb life is to have the dealer switch DRLs off, done only by using the Vadis PC (no other method exists for the new car owner now).

The 98-00's had this problem too V70-XC70 2001

As did the S80's. In my 98, the problem was fixed in recall with a new connector and wiring harness patch. I don't think Volvo has figured out headlights, yet.

They figured out the headlamp problem, my '00 S70 just had a headlamp recall 101B done which is supposed to address this problem. I have never had a problem other than turn signals, which was also done, recall 101A.
