oddly repeating 'clunk' in drivetrain, stumps dealership, and 'experts' S70 2000

I have a 2000 S70AWD with 30,000 miles that has developed the strangest problem. After coming to a complete stop, accelerating normally, and arriving at about 30-50mph, the car makes a clunking noice and feels like it has just hit a bump, almost the sensation that it has "stubbed it's toe". It does this only once as long as the car remains moving. After coming to a complete stop it will do the same thing again, only once, only after reaching 30-50mph. It does this once after every complete stop, never more, and every time. It usually occurs after reaching that speed range and holding it under little or no acceleration.

The "clunk" ranges from mild (just feels like a small bump in the road), to occasionaly fairly strong, (easily noticed, and strong enough to kind of "blip" the handling for a second and rattle the dash).

It sort of feels like the tranny trying to downshift, but not really, and there is no shift in gears (at least the tach stays steady).

My dealership is stumped, they suggested that I flush and fill the tranny, which I did at $85 with no change. They say there are no software updates or glitches with the tranny. I'm not sure they quite understand the symtoms even yet, or ever will for that matter. Their "expert" in drivetrains never heard of such a thing.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to those who keep this forum going!

    I have a question S70 2000

    Hi,

    I have a Question.

Does the bump occur when you let your foot off of the gas? That is if you accelerate from a stop, lets say up to 50mph and at no time you let your foot off of the gas, does the bump occur? Or does the bump occur after you let your foot off of the gas?

    Thanks,

    Steven---

      I have a question S70 2000

      Hi,

It occurs under just light acceleration or no acceleration. It's not when you let off the gas, it's usually under a steady speed but it happens independent of pedal movement. And, if you keep you foot on the gas the entire time it will still happen.

      thanks,

      Dave

        I have a question S70 2000

        Hi Dave,

My 1999 V70 XC had a similar problem but it was easily determined to be the transmission shifting between 3rd and 4th gears. The bump occurred more harshly when it was hot out. That is the hotter it was out side the harsher the shift/bump.

However, if I understand you correctly your so-called bump occurs independently of transmission shift. You can easily determine this by watching the tachometer. If the bump occurs with a drop in engine RPM then it is the transmission that is causing the bump feeling.

If I am correct and your bump occurs independently of transmission shift then I would bet that you have a problem with the drive train mounting points. That is either an engine mount is broken or loose or the sub frame is not mount correctly. Have the dealer check all the engine mounts (I believe there are 4 mounts, 1 top and 3 bottom). The sub frame on my car was not installed correctly at the factory. The dealer gave me the usual “We can not find anything wrong” answer. So I took my car to an independent Volvo repair shop and they found the sub frame spacers were worn causing the sub frame to move around. Also a bad ball joint could cause a popping sound if it too were bad.

        Good Luck,

        Steven---

I had a '92 100CS that acted the same way....they claimed it was torque converter locking up. Does it do the same thing in 3 vs D?

Isn't your car still under warranty with only 30K miles? If the dealer is suggesting treatments in an attempt to fix a confirmed problem (not normal wear and tear), you shouldn't be paying for it!

I'm just curious... has the dealer acknowledged that a problem exists? With much of the warranty work I had done through the years to my 99 T5, it was always very difficult to get dealers to pull their heads out of the sand and actually formally acknowledge that warranty repair was required.

Well, I made that argument with the dealer, rather strongly, but we got into the discussion of "general maintence and general performance of the vehicle would benifit from a tranny flush and fill". You're points are correct though.

Why should I be asked to flush and fill the tranny on a car under warranty to fix a definate problem, when the required interval for replacement is 52k, and only when towing!?

Sling, the answer is that they "believe me" but it feels ok to them. So, no they haven't properly acknowledged the problem yet. They're going to need to spend some time driving this car to get the sense of it. This is a quirky problem to describe. But it's real, it's new, and it's pretty unsettling on the road. So that's my challenge.

My best description yet is in the original post. Hopefully someone here can help me point the dealer in the direction of what it could be..

      Thanks Sling...,

      Dave
