2002 S40 any good? S40-V40 2002

I have a 1999 S70 NA. I've been thinking about getting a 2002 S40 1.9T. Then I was in the dealership the other day and they are having huge savings this month on the cars for current volvo owners. (I am wondering why, savings of $5000-$6000)

Another question for anyone that knows about the cars. Is it better to wait for a 2003? Or should I just wait until I can afford a S60 for next year, I do like the bigger car, but it's still thousands more.

Thanks for any information anyone knows about the cars, especially if there are any mechanics who know of anything.

Did you spend any time inside or driving one? If so, I doubt you'd want to downgrade that significantly, both in terms of size and quality. Nice cars for what they are, but I'd opt for the S60.

      I did test drive one.
If I were to get one I told the dealership I wanted the sport package, but they said it has been discontinued and they could still put on the rear wing and a couple of the other acessories at their shop.

If I went for the S60, it would be the 2.4T with upgrades like the stereo and a couple packages. I think it would be around $32,000 at today's pricing. But it is about 8000 more than if I got a decked out S40.

That means less debt in the long run.
I could use the extra money to do an ECU, exhaust...

There is no upgrade for the audio system on the 2.4T. Only the T5s can be upgraded (from the factory).

    2002 S40 any good? S40-V40 2002

I just purchase an S40 on June 21. Paid 7.8% BELOW factory invoice.

The 2003 models are arriving soon, therefore Volvo is offering incentives to the dealers in order to clear out stock. It seemed that the deep discounts were on the models with the Premium Plus package.

If you are considering a purchase, here is what worked for me:

    1) Decide what car you want with what options and in what color.
    2) Call all volvo dealers within 50 miles (for me it was 4) and speak to fleet purchasing to find out what they have in stock.
    3) Talk price with the fleet manager, working down from Factory Invoice, sharing the best price you had recieved elsewhere.

This should help you get a GREAT price.

Are you serious about those incentives or did you put an extra zero! Are they regional or national. Hey if savings are that significant I bet the dealers are heavely discounting your trade well below retail and wholesale. Let us know more details. My suggestion, as far as the car is concerned avoid the S40 & just get the S60 with the incentives you're in a great equity position and Im sure they wont be around when you want to purchase the S60 in 03. Plus if you like the 03 S60 you can trade the 02 and not be upside down.

The large incentive is only on the S40, you only get around $1000 off on an S60.

The S40 had a base of $18,995 instead of around high 23000 low 24000. plus the premium plus package had a tag of only 700-900 instead of a couple thousand.
The S80 is also discounted up to $7,000.

These deals are said to only be until the end of the month. Of course they are trying to get rid of the cars and if they dont sell enough I'm guessing they'll probably extend it.

I test drove an S40 and spoke with the manager of the delearship, so all of this is for real.

The '02 S40 is great! For that price with incentives, it certainly out classes comparably priced Camrys and Accords. The low prices are due to the upgrades on the '03 models.

WOW I really like the looks on the 03. I drive a 2001 S40 I leased last August so I was also able to get great incentives/deals. The 02 didn't look too different to me, but MAN the 03 is pretty. When my lease is up I'll take a look at the 04 S40 but I'd really like the S60 due to larger engine/interior.

I have a S70 now, so the inside of the S40 was a bit of a downgrade. But by the looks of the 03' it may be worth it to wait for the improvements in safety, engine, and looks.

Or I'll wait until I have enough for an A4 quattro in the next year.

Well yeah the S40 is going to be a slight downgrade compared to the S70. It is Volvo's entry-level car.....sorry, not trying to sound like an ass.

Seriously...went to lunch with an equipment vendor Thursday afternoon. His car was an '02 BMW 3series. I admit it was very nice. Exterior is beautiful, but I like the S40 interior better particularly the controls and displays.
