Check Engine light =4 th time in 6 months
posted by someone claiming to be GMurray on Thu Jun 13 23:02 2002

I have a 1999 V.70R AWD Station Wagon

I have taken it into dealership 4 times in last 6 months- each time it was said to be something different

in January- both Oxygen sensors were replaced after I complained about Running rough-Idle rough-black smoke coming from exhaust and buildup around tailpipe-

[oH 1st time a month earlier replaced Canister purge valve and added in line Filter]

1 weeks ago Engine light came on and Mass Air Flow Hose was deemed to be the cause.
Picked car up and drove 35 miles with 2 stop s-engine Light came on.

left car with dealer for a week and was told today that they had put Fresh air hose on.[they credited me for Mass air flow]

Drove 20 miles and filled up at gas station-

Engine Light came on- drives like its 'missing'

Black smoke coming from Exhaust.

Does anyone have any suggestions.?

I am told that this Diagnostic is not 'exact science'

Help

Hate to tell you but if the same symptoms keep returning, than the originol problem has not been fixed. Your situation is typical with many car makes, a mechanic who is not properly diagnosing the problem. You need to get another person to look over everything, not just fault codes, Many times a fault code is the result of something else, and replacing the first part "in line" is like putting a band aid on a deep cut. If the dealer you go to is the only one available for repairs, I would suggest meeting with the service manager to review the history. Show the manager the records, and how the same problem reappears.

    Good Luck

Curious, what is your mileage? We places mass air meter, O2 sensor and various other emissions parts twice, once at 15,000 and once at 32,000. Check engine light was on more than off. We are holding our breath. We have 53,000 now and so far no light.

Unfortunately for you, it'll have to go back to a dealer once again as codes will have to be read first.
Whoever said "not exact science' in regards to your description is correct as there's several things that can cause check engine lights and/or missing, black smoke. There's no sense in guessing here about what "might be ....." the cause(s) as most likely the guesses will be wrong and they won't help you.
