95 exhaust..throaty??? 850 1995

Hi everyone...purchased a 95 wagon with 50k mi 3wks ago (not turbo). Dealer went over it top to bottom and made repairs due, timing belt etc. The exhaust system sounds kinda loud to me, but he said the 95's are "throaty" and tend to be noisey. Anyone else experience this?
Thanks

    yeah, the normally aspirated inline-5 is a little "throaty." it has a very distinctive metallic sound that no other car maker produces, cause no one else in my recollection makes an inline-5. the 850 and s70 series with the n/a i5 all have that distinctive sound, listen carefully the next time a n/a 850 (base and glt except 97) or s70 (base) passes by. the turbos are slightly muted due to the way turbos are located.

      A turbo does offer a level of muffling. It is scavenging engergy from the exhaust gas flow: pressure (good), heat(necessary evil), noise(by product)

      You could get by with removing a muffler from most turbo'ed vehicles. A simple resonator will keep the cabin noise levels down beyond that.

      I didn't realize that the turbo location made a difference. How?

        oh, sorry =), i meant the turbo is located after the engine

        Engine ---> Exhaust manifold ---> Turbo ---> Downpipe ---> Cat ---> Mufflers ---> Out

        not how far down the turbo is located...i don't know about that.

    The non-turbos have a throaty sound (the turbo models are quieter).
    Its not just the 95 model year.

      How long have you had the car?? I have a '94 non-turbo, and it does have a throaty sound. However, I got used to it and didn't notice it much after a month or two.

        Thanks everyone for your replies...I really appreciate it, thought maybe more $$ for an exhaust. I will give it more time..just had about a month and maybe enjoy the great sounds system it has..Thanks again all.

          I think the 5 cyl has a cool gargle to it. Check of you have the big square silencer under the rear seat, if so that is standard if not you might have an aftermarket system.

          Mine does not have a cat and is a little bit louder but not intrusive or dooming at all. I hear more wind and tyre noise than exhaust noise, even under load like florring at 3000 revs in top
