Whining feul pump in 98 XC V70-XC70

I am having a problem with my fuel pump. It started whining, a real high pitch noise that seems worse when the tank is below 7 gallons. I had it to my dealer who replaced it on warranty. The noise continues and drives me crasy when I don't have the radio on, or when I am not friving at highway speeds where the road noise kind of drowns it out. Does anyone have any input on this noise and what I can tell my dealer to get it taken care of? Thanks.

Hi,

You should not hear the fuel pump inside the car while driving. If the dealer replaced the pump once and the problem still exist then I would have the dealer check out the fuel delivery system. That is the fuel is pump to the fuel bar located on the intake manifold where the fuel is delivered to the fuel injectors. Excess fuel is then sent back to the gas tank. Along the way there are Emission systems and a pressure regulator. If something is blocking the free flow of fuel to the engine and then back to the gas tank then the fuel pump will work harder then it should thus causing the high pitch sound.

Have the Dealer assign a good technician who knows the fuel system well and have a through inspection and test done.

Good Luck,

Steven---

Those pumps ARE usually noisy and there's no "cure". I'm surprized that your dealer replaced it but if you now have had 2 noisy pumps, you should know that that's just the way that it is.
