Electric motor/grinding sound from engine compartment when cold V70-XC70 1998

Lately I've been hearing an electric motor/grinding sound from under the hood when the engine is cold as I begin to drive away. It only lasts for a few seconds, a minute at the most. Sounds like its coming from the left side of the engine compartment. The engine doesn't run in any abnormal way and no indicator or warning lights come on when I hear it. Then it just shuts off and the electric motor sound just turns off and the sound gradually fades away.

I have no clue what this might be. Anyone have any ideas?

I am experiencing the exact same noise/location/duration as you explain. I occasionally hear it when the car is both cold and warm though. Did you find anything out? Your help is much appreciated.

I've narrowed it down to the secondary air injection pump and the secondary air system valve. I looked around for the parts and found the cheapest to be

      AutoShow Volvo - 1 508-336-9777

      91792713-3 Air Pump - 233.09
      1271764-1 Gasket - 1.42
      9125623-0 Check Valve - 67.21

      Total - 301.63

What ever you do do not go to the dealer. The parts are over $500 if you go there. You can get all the clamps there, though. At least they're cheap.

I've decided not to change the pump just yet because its not throwing any check engine light codes, but it will probably be a matter of time.It doesn't look too hard to do. Thanks for all the help folks....

Check www.volvospeed.com for secondary air injection pump. It's located on the left side under the battery and runs for the first two minutes after a cold start. Good luck.

I had a similar noise and my turbo had gone! ($1200!!!)

I must admit, this car has not been trouble free considering what I paid for it!
