Speed rated tires S40-V40

Time for new tires for my 2000 S40. The originals are V rated. The tire dealers say I can get away with H rating. Is this true? Of course, the Volvo dealer says buy the V rated tires. The difference is about $200 a set. Any opinions? Thanks.

The OE V-rated tires are matched to the factory rated speed of the S40, which is over 130 mph. A H-rated tire is rated for speeds up to the max of 130mph.

Go to tirerack.com, and one can them see what is offered for one's style of driving and the area that the vehicle will be driven in, as to whether one will continue with a all-season tire to match the OE type, or switch to a performance tire not rated for snow.

Should one want to be aggressive and use a max-performance tire for the three seasons, and then have to switch to a snow for the winter, I have experience the following combination that has been rated by numerous scources as one of the best performance combinations.

I use the Bridgestone Potenza S03 (205/55/15) as mounted to 15X7" wheels, and the Michelin Artic Alpin 195/60/15 as mounted on the OE wheels. The S03s are highly rated by tirerack per their own tests, and one will NOT FIND a better tire warranty as that offered on the S03s--free test for the first month, with 100% return on one's money, and a 100% free replacement lifetime manufacturer's defect warranty till the last 2/32 of tire wear!

The handling is AWESOME, as they say in NASCAR, and the noise is less than what I experienced with the OE Michelin MXV4. TRY THEM, YOU'LL LOVE THEM--if performance is the name of your driving game, but then, isn't that one reason that you bought the S40. P.S.--don't forget to add the sport rear roll bar, and the strut tower brace to complement the agressive performance of the new tires!

An H rated is good for 130MPH so you should be fine. We have Michilin
Pilot H's on our 850 and that is a fine tire. Set of 4 should be
    around $400.

    Details here for some research:

It all depends on how fast you like to travel. If you regularly drive at high speeds you want to make sure the tire is designed to handle it. I can't recall the speed ratings from memory, but just ask the tire dealer what the speed ratings are, as long as you don't drive faster than the speed that h rated tires cover then they should be fine. (in North America if you follow the speed limit then you wouldn't have any problem, I think you are generally fine with anytire up to 80 MPH and then the speed ratings take effect (but don't quote me on that). The V rated tire might have a slightly more agressive compund and give slightly better handling (though not necessarily) but in normal driving you probably wouldn't notice the difference anyway.
