The OE V-rated tires are matched to the factory rated speed of the S40, which is over 130 mph. A H-rated tire is rated for speeds up to the max of 130mph.
Go to tirerack.com, and one can them see what is offered for one's style of driving and the area that the vehicle will be driven in, as to whether one will continue with a all-season tire to match the OE type, or switch to a performance tire not rated for snow.
Should one want to be aggressive and use a max-performance tire for the three seasons, and then have to switch to a snow for the winter, I have experience the following combination that has been rated by numerous scources as one of the best performance combinations.
I use the Bridgestone Potenza S03 (205/55/15) as mounted to 15X7" wheels, and the Michelin Artic Alpin 195/60/15 as mounted on the OE wheels. The S03s are highly rated by tirerack per their own tests, and one will NOT FIND a better tire warranty as that offered on the S03s--free test for the first month, with 100% return on one's money, and a 100% free replacement lifetime manufacturer's defect warranty till the last 2/32 of tire wear!
The handling is AWESOME, as they say in NASCAR, and the noise is less than what I experienced with the OE Michelin MXV4. TRY THEM, YOU'LL LOVE THEM--if performance is the name of your driving game, but then, isn't that one reason that you bought the S40. P.S.--don't forget to add the sport rear roll bar, and the strut tower brace to complement the agressive performance of the new tires!
