Driver Door-internal CRUNCH! sound - now flings open 850 1996

96 850turbo w/85,000 miles. Yesterday opened the drivers door and heard a metalic CRUNCH/BREAK sound. Now the door doesn't pause at 45degrees when opens, just swings out. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, how to fix?

We are gentle on this car, but it just seems to be a drama queen. I have learned how to fix the T-Valve, recharge the A/C, and am going to tackle my Microswitch for the Shift lock all from this site.

Thank in advance.

There are 2 possibilities. Common, the attachment for the door check strap broke at the body mounting point, and will have to be welded. Less common, the spring in the door check broke inside the door. No welding required, but the part must be replaced. Door panel has to come off.

It's the weld on the door stop or something. I thought it was just ours, but after reading this board I can see many many people have had to deal with this. It needs to be welded back into place at around $150 by the body shop.
I just don't open the door all the way if I can help it.
