Switch from manual to automatic climate control? 850 1994

Hello all,

Is it possible to remove my manual climate control system and pop in an automatic one? I like the auto system better. I remember another post that said the climate controls are all contained in the head so maybe they would just swap? Anybody tried this?

You'd have to replace the entire under-the-dash unit, as I recall. The automatic A/C unit has about a hundred little motors to open various flaps and diverters and such, including the recirculate air flap, whereas the manual A/C has leverfs adn cables for this stuff. There are also temperature sensors in the ductwork under the dash for the driver's/passengers control temperature in addition to the ones in the grab handles.

I'd look for a car that already has it.

There was a discussion about this some time ago, check the archives. Since it's not just the panel and computer there are a bunch of sensors scattered around the interior, I suppose it's do-able but I'd think hardly worth the trouble.

The only reason my own car has the ACC (and the sunroof and the power seats) is that it all came with the T5 motor, I had no choice.

Changing from the manual to automatic climate control system is not quite that simple. The automatic climate control system has two temperature sensors, one behind the drivers side "oh sh_t" handle and another behind the passengers side handle. I also think there is some additional wiring in the auto system that doesn't exist in the manual system. Someone here may have done it before and can give you specifics, but I'm going to say it's not going to be an easy task to do.

I hope this helps.

Suppose it would be possible- but why the heck would you want to create more complexities for yourself? What would be your gain from such a conversion?

I have a 95 850 turbo with the automatic climate control system- and frankly, the manual system is simpler and does the same job.

I have the automatic system also and find it responds too slowly for me so I'm always fiddling with it. OTOH, once things have stabilized it works pretty well maintaining the temp.
