Oil Pump Questions... 850

The ticking is driving me insane and is very constent. I'm planning a long trip and would like to do it tick free.

My questions:

-How much would/should a new oil pump with all new seals cost?

-How difficult is it to install/time involved?

-Any tricks to the install I should know?

-What other seals/misc. do you recomend while I have it torn all apart?

Thanks in advance

did you have a leak also....I have a leak either at cam seals or crank seal/oil pump. I think I am going to try replacing oil pump, cam seals and timing belt in one fell swoop. I talked to a shop..they of course would not give me a very accurate estimate but with the estimates they were throwing out....$400+ for crank seal and or oil pump, $225 for timing belt...and I quit paying attention after that. Looks like one could easily ruin $1000 replacing all these things. Bought a Haynes and between that and this great forum I think it can be done. I am anxious to see responses...may change my mind.

      Oil Pump Questions... 850

When I pulled my oil pan there was a minor build up of dry sludge around that area of the pan. There has never been any wet leaking that I've noticed in the 10,000 miles + I've driven it. In fact I checked the other day and it's still dry in that area.

On feedback through the board I've been told that the oil pump seal can degrade and let air in. I know it can happen as I've had a few subaru's that've had the same basic problem (cam seal on pump hardens and lets air in... not necessarily leaking oil out either) This is just the last step in trying to solve my very loud lifters.. well besides replacing the whole set.

You can get a good look into the area by looking behind tha access flap behind the wheel. It's covered in the Haynes manual.

I am still struggling with my noisy lifter problem too, unfortunately not only has my oil pump, and seals been replaced. I also had all the lifters replaced as well and the noise is still there. I didnt have to pay for the parts, but now I am really worried as to what the noise could be. The noise you are experiencing a clicking/tapping noise that gets worse as you rev right? Good luck

        Hi,

Sorry if I've missed a previous post and am asking about something you've already covered, but have you done an engine flush and tried a lighter weight oil yet? It worked to permanently (so far 5,000 miles since I bought the car) quiet a noisy lifter I had. I went to 5W30 after a flush with an over the counter product and haven't had the noise return. Now I'm using 10W30 again (warmer weather) and still no noise.

Has the camshaft cover been off your engine? Looking at the Haynes photos and studying the oil path to the lifters, if the cover isn't sealed properly when reinstalled it looks like you'd lose oil pressure to the lifters.

Using a stethescope, or long screwdriver against the ear, can you determine if the noise is intake or exhaust side? Both?

The lifter oil gallery is cast or machined into the cover as a trough and the cylinder head's flat mating surface provides the lower portion of the gallery. The lifter feed holes are drilled from the mating surface of the head to the lifter bores. I believe I must have had one, the middle exhaust, that had a partially blocked feed hole that was cleared by the flush.

Just my experience with this.. Hope it helps.
