O2 Sensors after Quick Fix, Will not run, towed home, please help... 850 1996

'96 854 R

Last night I tried the O2 sensor quick fix from OzBrick:
http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/engine-o2-quickfix.html

I have been looking into some performance and mileage loss causes and thought I would give this a try.

Did the entire process to both O2 sensors, took it for a test drive, ran great until it warmed up and I floored it to check my boost levels. Ran hard bursts two times, at the next light sputtered and died. When I try to start it, it runs for just a second then completely dies. Continued start attempts gave same results.
1) The front sensor has slits in it that are about half an inch long. When cleaning the sensor with the wire(brass) brush some of the wire brush went through the slots on the side. Could I have disturbed the internal components?
2) What are the chances I've destroyed both Sensors and not just the front?
3) Could I have done any greater damage, than the sensors, while driving or repeated attempts at starting?

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Oliver.

O2 Sensors after Quick Fix, Will not run, towed home, please help... 850 1996

I have a 94 850 turbo and have had a few problems similiar... I haven't done the o2 sensor fix BUT...

maybe you have a separate problem

Here is what my symptoms where...

I could start the car but as I started down the street... it would run but when I let off on the gas, it would stall... and stop... I could start it up and as long as I had my foot on the gas, it would run, but wouldn't idle... just stall and die...

If this is your problem... try this...

I had some error codes popping up and was given advice on this board to check vacuum lines...

As I checked the lines I found several that needed replacing, including one that goes from the air intake (connects to a larger tube that leads to the throttle body) to the Idle Air Control Motor... This hose (probably 1.5" dia. that runs from the throttle body intake to the IAC could have a crack in it... if so, try taping it with some kind of stout tape... you know... duct tape... just to see if the problem is remedied... if so, go get the replacement hose... I did this and it fixed the problem... check all the hoses on your car carefully as any cracks can cause erroneous codes...

    Best of luck!

    Shawn

Do you get any fault code ????

personly I think you don't damage any thing...

check all your spark plug and rotor cap for connection..

check all electrical connection... sometime that all it is..

can not hepl here with O2 sensor I have not done mine..

put please keep us post what is the out come and solution...

I don't see how you can damage both sensor at one time ...

wort case it buy 2 new one .. disconnect your battery clear all the code.. and re strat the thing again who know it may work....

Are you sure you followed the steps exactly? I've done this to two 850's now, and both allowed the O2 sensor another year or two of life before they finally failed.

From what I have read, you've destroyed your sensors by using the wire brush. Inside each O2 sensor is basically, a zirconium ceramic bulb with a thin layer platinum on both the inside and the outside of the zirconium ceramic bulb. It is very possible that a wire bristle could have damaged the bulb within.

It sounds very much like a sensor has failed, or not installed/wired properly, causing improper air-fuel mix.

Sin, I'm sure the fault in this whole mess was my own. I know I did not torch the front sensor just brushed it and sprayed it with the brake cleaner. The reason I did not torch the front was that there really was not enough slack in the wire to position myself to use the torch. I work in my apartment garage and learn as I go(probably my first mistake). I heated the rear sensor until the end was red hot, but then stopped. I didn't know how long I should heat it to break up the contaminants, nor did I want to cook the wiring or any other sensitive electrical components. I'm ordering the Front sensor, praying the back is still good, tomorrow. I'll let you guys know what the results are.

One other thing, there was a mention of the hose on the intake, just past the MAF sensor. The hose is very brittle, and would not seal correctly. I used a worm gear clamp on the end of it to tighten it up, but I may have unintentionally cracked it in an not visible spot while doing it. I'll check that tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone for the help, keep the suggestions coming if you've got any, I'm definitely interested.

      Oliver.

Faulty O2 sensors should not keep the engine from running unless you shorted out the heating element and blew the fuse. Sounds more like you have a major air leak. Possibly blew off a turbo hose or something.

I guess I'll check for that on my lunch today, Hopefully it's that simple. Will I need new Plugs, cap, or wires after this. I figured by the way the car was missing/sputtering, I fouled my plugs at least.

          Thanks for the help,

          Oliver.

I would think the plugs could take it as long as it is not a long
term condition. Wires and caps, no problem.

If it was running rich enough to flood (not start) then you might
want to change the oil since a lot of fuel could have made its
way down into the oil. This would also foul the plugs but once dried
            out they should be ok.

Things are looking up... 850 1996

I went home for lunch today and checked out the engine compartment to look as much as I could for an intake leak. There it is! the intake hose had disconnected from the MAF! I can't believe I didn't see it before(feel like an idiot) but it was nightime when I did the last test drive and had the problems.

Now, I am hoping that since I did SUCH A GOOD JOB cleaning my O2 sensors that the addition of the boost, I had previously lost, built enough pressure to blow off the hose. I tried to start it but now my battery is too weak, due to repeated starting attempts the night it happened. Hopefully this is all that's wrong now and I'll be fine after the battery is taken care of. I'll get a jump this afternoon and post the results tomorrow.

              Thanks!

              Oliver
