Fun at the strip 850

Well I took 4 runs at the local 1/4 mile tonight. My 855 T is stock except for a manual boost controller (set at 12.5psi for the night). My first run was a 15.2 at 91mph. Not too bad. The next 2 runs were an excercise in wheel spin. The last run was 14.9 at 92mph. That is what I wanted to see. The funny part was the announcer was calling the Volvo the grocery getter as it staged. (My friend was in the stands at the time) So, when we turned in our times he said "and if anyone needs groceries in a hurry find the Volvo." I take that as a compliment since I spanked an 89 Firebird TA on that run.

If I floored my volvo for 14 seconds I would be well over 100mph 850

I must be able to pull a 12 1/4 mile.

Be worth trying. It takes over 7000 hp / 7000 ft/lbs of torque for a top fueler to break into the 4s and top 300mph.

I think turbo 850s run in the 6s to make 60mph. That doesn't mean 12s will get you around 120mph.

I might have to try for myself with my stock 855t at one of the weekly tune-n-test nights here at Memphis Motorsports Park. $15 to learn the truth.

BTW, Road & Track, in their '94 855t test report just over 7s 0-60 and over 15s 1/4mile.

    Just one more question 850

I thought of this after posting my last message. What gear and rpm do you reach by the 1/4 mile mark? Have you tried a run with the trans in "3" instead of Drive? Just wondering if holding a higher rpm in 3rd would help. Barring running into the rev limiter. Thanks,

BTW, I went to Memphis Motorsports Park's website and they have Sunday and Thursday "Tune & Test" night. From 6 to 10pm, it's $15 to race, $5 to watch. I think I'm gonna hafta go.

Do they give you 60 foot times? That would seem to be the key with
    high powered front-wheel drive cars.

I have a 98 T5 (stock) with a manual transmission and when launched
well it is pretty fast off the line -- it is just hard to do well and
I think the driveline would be ruined in an effort to learn it "well".
    Still, sounds like fun.

How do the classes break down? What class would a turbo car run in?

nice times, the best i have been able to get is a 14.1. but i have springs, z rated tires, manual boost controller @ 15 psi, RActive intake, Remus exhaust. i think my car was running 15.1 in stock form. impressive. becareful when messing with the boost controller. i had to replace a tranny b/c it wanted to run 19psi in 4th gear. but we all make stupid errors and pay the consequence. hav fun and race safe.

Wow, you car is very fast. My goal was just to get the car as fast as the R wagon and I think I have accomplished that. When I dialed in the boost controller I was able to pin point certain levels of boost and I remebered them. If I didn't get a 14 sec run at 12.5psi I was going to make one last pass with 13.5psi. However right before I left I turned it back down to 10.5psi. That is plenty fast for the street. I don't want to achieve the best time in the wagon (it is my daily driver) so the 14.9 is very satisfing. However I think I will change the tranny fluid this summer just as a saftey precausion. BTW, when the wagon was dead stock it ran a 15.9 at 89mph.

that is excellent that you were able to drop a full second from stock form with only one modification. i ran my car at 19psi for a time, but wasn't able to get to a strip before i blew the transmission. we are having test and tune days comeing up this next Wednesday and plan to run my firnd in his Nissan 300zx. i just can't get a whole lot more power out of it, so i am building a Nissan Silvia which will run low 12's or high 11's depending how high i turn up the turbo. it shoudl be complete by December 21st. a birthday present to myself, hehe. excellent work on that gain, mad props.

and def change the fluid to full synthetic tranny fluid. i run 12psi on my car on the road and 15-19 on the strip, depending on my mood and whether i need to to beat my competition. of course i lose more than i win. try racing a 9 sec mustang.

Nice times! A Volvo wagon breaking into the high 14s stock is impressive. Did you power brake it, and if so at what RPM? I find that off the line my 854 Turbo is a slug, but once the high pressure turbo kicks in, hang on! Any idea what my car would run in the 1/4? It's stock except for a K&N air filter, and is like yours but is a sedan (not a wagon) and only has 39k miles.

Thanks, when I launched the car I power braked until the boost gauge read 0-2psi. (droped the front tires to 25psi as well) That is what worked the best. Anymore boost than that and I just spin the tires. I probably could have got it down to 14.7 if I tossed out the spare, third seat and another 1/4 tank of gas, but I can live with 14.9. Anyway, your sedan should easily be able to do that if you just address the spoolup issue. Either put about 3.5 turns on you wastegate rod, or put on a manual boost controller. Stock, there is just no boost below 2k rpms because of wastegate creep. Once you elliminate that you can get a good launch.

Speaking of good launches, on my last run I lined up against my friends new WRX. He got a perfect launch and reaction time. So out of the hole he had a car length on me. I pulled back up to his side before we finished. He turned 14.8 at 89 to my 14.9 at 92. Quite fun!

        Quaz~

Yeah I've been thinking of doing something to get the car moving fast off the line. I contemplated adjusted the wastegate, but the manual boost controller may be more practical. How does it work, where can I get one, and how easy are they to setup?

        Thanks!

          Jay,
Read my post from last week on the manual boost controller. You can find it
here. If after you read it and have questions email me and I will be happy to answer them kkwas@(nospam)wi.rr.com. If you just want faster spoolup though put three turns on you wastegate and you will be more than pleased.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Memphis Motorsports Park is 5 miles from my house and they have a GREAT dragstrip. The NHRA runs the MidSouth Nationals there annually.

The Grand Knight of my Knights Of Columbus council has a Camaro he runs in sportsman classes. Maybe I should get out there and see what my 'lil green wagon will do.
