OK guys and at the certain risk of bringing on another Amsoil vs. Mobil 1 discussion - I must say I am dissapointed at the new manner Mobil 1 is being marketted. Seems the marketting gurus at Mobil 1 have decided to offer a plethora of variations leaving me a bit confused.

Now I have been a loyal Mobil 1 user for about 12 or so years - but now I am getting a bit concerned about all the reformulations.

I've had a few words on these boards in the past with the Amsoil folks - but now, I am very close to switching over to Amsoil 10-30 for my beloved family vehicles.

Can anyone convince me that Mobil 1 is still the superior product it once was?

Hmm,

While on a trip I stopped at Autozone to buy a quart of Mobil-1 10W30 (my turbo oil return line was leaking, will fix soon) and didn't notice it was the new "SL" formulation for "high mileage engines" until I got home.

If this is the "New" semi-synth, they didn't lower the price any. I still paid $4.50 for the quart.

Following the various links and posts in this thread I found reference to Valvoline's synth being of of the few remaining non-dino blends. Of course there's Amsoil.

I can tell you that the Amsoil does exceed M1 in just about any ASTM or SAE test I've ever seen. That's good enough for me. Plus, I've been running it in my Jeep for over 4 years and 100K plus miles with only 4 oil changes. Engine still runs like new. Doesn't burn any oil, and the compression is still factory new. What more could I ask for? In my t5 I change it every 10K miles, using the 10W-30.

Sorry for the blank but back to the point. I have V70GLT and have been using Mobil 1 90% of the time with the remaining 10% Castrol Synthec. The car has 126,000 km and no oil use. I also have 1990 Honda Accord with 460,000 km and the car has been on Castrol dino oil since new. Gas milage is only 5% worse then when new and oil consumption is 1/2 litre per 8,000 km.

Apparently there were a few folks on the probe board who had mistaken Farenheit and Celsius in the temperature categories of the oil tests. That can't improve some of the things said about the oil.

There is a good thread about it in the 900 series forum right now.

I too have used Mobil 1 for a long time, although not in the last year for various reasons. Also I've used Amsoil products. It's a hard choice if the rumors about Mobil 1 are true, but I'm not sure that it's all gospel.

Well I am not sure about all the different oil on the market but can share with you experience last 30 years.....

I always use what ever oil that on sale... most time .99 per quates

all my car never have any engien problem....

I change oil every 10,000 mile not every 3000 like other said...

with my turbo I change every 5000 miles..

why do I use cheap oil you asked....

1.. Most all car problem that taking to the shop always something to with electrical, starter motor problem, transmission, aircondition, brake prblem..

miss firing , and the list go on and on...... but 99% it have nothing to do with the oil you use in the car....

some of my friend change oil every 3000 miles and they have all kind off problem with their car how do we answer this ?? some even have burn valve problem...

personly I think most expensive is a way to take our $$$$$$$ like using expensive gas.... like using expensive brake pad....

I stick with what work and safe few dollard...

Mrsha,

I appreaciate your common sense approach - and generally agree with most of what you say.

However, I believe turbo charged engines do need the additional protection of a synthetic lubricant( especially after shut-down when the heat buildup can coke up dino oil).

Again, I have read many of your posts here over the past year and agree, for the most part, with your thinking. Sounds like you and I have done many of the same maintenance items.

regards,

nathan

Follow up to Amsoil guys, is 10-30 weight the right option for my 1995 850 Turbo in Houston, Texas (read hot and humid in the summer and mild winters).

Nathan-
10W-30 will be fine, as will 5W-30. My choice would be the AMSOIL 0W-30.
Remember, the lower number (xW) shows the resistance to flow at cold. The upper number shows the resistance to flow at 210 F. All xW-30 oils are in the same viscosity range at operating temperature.

I have a friend in Houston who races (has held about 15 different drag records over the years. He runs AMSOIL 0W-30 all year there, and is delighted with it.
