Which Axle do Snow Chains go on???? V70-XC70 2001

On which axle do I put snow chains on for this vehicle? Since its a AWD wouldn't they go on the front wheels?

You must be driving in some serious winter conditions to want chains. I have an AWD, and would never use chains. Maybe you should look at winter tires or studded tires, an easier and safer alternative, chains can detach and damage your car. AWD is the best traction system around, with good tires you will go anywhere as long as you don't bury the chassis.

You would "never" use chains? Well, then, you would turn around and go home because they are sometimes required in mountain areas, no exceptions. Glare ice is nasty stuff.

BTW, chains go on the front of AWD Volvos, although the only type approved by Volvo are the unusual and expensive Spikes Spider. However, I don't see why other low profile types wouldn't work if you're careful about fit.

In a TSB for 98s they say:

On all-wheel drive cars, (AWD), snow chains must only be mounted on
the front wheels. Only snow chains intended for all-wheel drive
(AWD) cars can be used. Never install snow chains on a temporary
    spare tire.

Does your owners manual address it in more detail?

What's the difference between chains for AWD vs. Front wheel drive. I have Volvo chains for my 98 C70 that I was planning to use for the 2002 XC. I haven't done a dry fitting, I assumed that they should fit. They are current sized for 225/45/17, but I assume that they would fit a 215/65/16.

        Hi John,

There is no difference between AWD chains and a regular chain. The only issue you need to keep in mind is the wheel well clearance. On the 98 thru 00 XC the wheel well clearance is very tight (I am not sure on the 2001/2002 XC wheel well clearance). Volvo has approved Spike Spiders. I am using Spike Spiders. They are very expensive (around $300) but are easy to install when needed. I have seen other low clearance tire chains on the market. You might want to look around before you buy.

        Good Luck,

        Steven---

I have no idea; thats the first time I ever hear of AWD chains, too.

    Hi,

Front wheels. The front wheels are the primary drive wheels and chains always go on the primary drive wheels.
