Planning to start doing own oil changes on n/a 2000 V70 w/35,000 miles -- and switch to synthetic at same time (I have the ipd filter wrench and cartridge filter element).

Car has been meticulously maintained by dealer till now; still intend to have dealer do the major stuff at suggested intervals.

Has anyone caught any flak from dealer when doing own oil changes? Should I expect any?

I AM NOW THE PROUD OWNER OF A 2002 V70 AND JUST RECIEVED "STICKER SHOCK" OVER THE CHARGE FOR A OIL CHANGE AT THE LOCAL VOLVO DEALER. $58.00 U.S. ! SO, NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM INTERESTED IN CHANGING MY OWN OIL OR FOR FINDING LOWER COST MAINSTREAM OIL CHANGE (JIFFY LUBE ETC.) PLACE THAT CAN HANDLE AN OIL CHANGE ON MY 2002 V70 (NON-TURBO). OR I COULD PERFORM THE OIL CHANGES MYSELF, IF I GO THIS ROUTE, WHAT SPECIAL TOOLS DO I NEED ? DO I NEED A SPECIAL OIL FILTER WRENCH ? DO I NEED TO RESET THE MAINTENANCE LIGHT ? I KNOW THAT I NEED TO BUY THE OIL FILTER INSERT BUT ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW ?

Well, I run the shop at a dealer service dept. The only time we don't like someone chaging their own oil is when they over tighten the drain plug or mess up the plastic filter housing. Pay close attention to the place ment of the o-ring, I've seen a couple of people learn the hard way. BTW, the dealer wrench from Volvo is much better than the IPD one!

Haven't had the opportunity to compare the wrenches side by side. Do you have a part/order number for the Volvo filter wrench?

I certainly would hope not. The mechanic at he dealer that I use even tells me when I can do a job vs him being needed. I would suggest keeping all receipts in a file just to keep warranty info up to date...

I have done all the oil changes on my 01 from the git-go. No flack from dealer, but dealer attitudes vary.

Any service tech person at a dealership that gives you flak for changing your own oil should be fired. Unless he/she brings a legitimate concern to your attention, there is absolutely no reason why a service tech should give you a hard time.
