Mann oil filters vs.Volvo 850

Recently, I took my '94 850 turbo wagon into my independent Volvo mechanic to
have some minor work done & he noticed the Mann oil filter on the car(I had just
changed the oil). He advised me to always use Volvo oil filters, whether purchased at his shop or a dealer, as the Mann filters do not have the valve in
them that prevents the return of oil to the crankcase when the engine is stopped. I was under the impression that Mann made the oil filters for Volvo
& were just as good. Any comments? I plan on keeping the car for a long time
& do not mind paying $10/filter at the dealer if this helps prolong engine life.

On the Mann web site they say:

"MANN+HUMMEL products are manufactured to the highest quality standards. This also applies to OE products, which we supply to nearly every leading automobile manufacturer, and our spare parts distributed under the MANN-FILTER brand-name. We automatically implement our OE customer requirements relating to standard products in our MANN-FILTER range of products."

In other words...It's the exact same filter.

Make mine Volvo.

If you do a search on this site for "oil filter" you get a result of 3477 pages.

I have seen this topic discussed almost every week since I started reading this excellent site.

While I have not read many of the links cited, I have not read any comment that is better than "since Mann makes Volvo filters, they must be as good as Volvo filters" including the advice from Bay 13. I do not think that the person making this statement is incorrect, but it poor logic.

I would much rather see something from Volvo or Mann on the subject. Considering the economics involved, I doubt that a clear statement addressing the issue is forthcoming.

Hi,

My understanding is Mann makes the filters for Volvo and they're the same. Go to:

http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/servicefwd.htm

and scroll down to "OIL CHANGE" for what I'd consider the gospel on oil and filters for our 850s.

BTW, my dealer gets $12 for a Volvo filter. Manns can be bought from sources like IPD or others for about $5. There have been threads recently about oil filter tests and the Purolator "PURE ONE" seems to share top honors with the Mobil 1 filter.

I searched around the web and found:

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/

which has great information on filters. I was shocked to find that FRAM is regarded as poorly as it is. I've used them for years on several cars.

Regards,

Just a note (not sure of the differences):

OEM Volvo filters are $5.48 at www.volvoparts.com. 0.78 for the crush washer.
