Disappointing results in the 1/4 mile! V70-XC70

I took the 98 V-70 XC to the track last night and had poor results. My car has the IPD ECU upgrade and the 2000 V-70 R exhaust. Factory stock this car should run 15.90 @ 88 MPH. I ran 15.40 @ 89 MPH, 100 ft above sea level, 52 deg. F. I would love to hear anyone elses feedback on how their car has performed with the ECU upgrade. I guess that the time was OK (not the 1+ second reduction IPD was claiming), but the MPH not going up as a result of the additional HP has me stumped. I am also figuring the car weighs in at 3800 #'s with me behind the wheel.

Thanks!

Mike

Low pressure turbo, AWD transmission drag and ECU limiters. Though very nicely appointed, and more than adequately powered, this is a family car, not a race car.

You want sport and AWD, you gotta get an S4.

Mike:
Is your car the low pressure turbo, or the R model?. There is quite a differance in the available power increase between the 2. I have the 98 R with IPD power pack, and due to the increased torque, the new ECU limits power until 4500 RPM to limit transmission wear. I spoke with TME (manufactuer of items) and they say the stock converter will not handle the 290+ HP, so the limit is needed. You can get the ECU which does not limit to 4500RPM, but they highly reccomend a diffrent converter (which Volvo does sell).
So...that is why your times are slower.

Spence

Disappointing results in the 1/4 mile! V70-XC70

My 855T with a custom exhaust, mitsu wastegate, intake, and FULL suspension (suspension can drop your 1/4 by .3 seconds!!!), runs consistent low 14's with traps in the low 100mph on "stock" ECU.

Just to give you a comparison, my BONE STOCK 98' Nissan Maxima SE 5 spd runs the 1/4 in 14.8.

Unless you get a 5 spd, and lighten up that brick, it'll never pull solid 1/4 mile times without a TONNE of money. A FWD 855 weighs in at around 3700lbs without the driver. So add the weight of a HEAVY and inefficient AWD, and yourself, and you're easily in the 4000lbs area. The 854 weighs in at around 3600lbs.

My Maxima gives up about 70hp and about 60ft.lbs of torque, but weighs a pinch over 3000lbs, and has a stick shift. BTW, don't ask why my Volvo's ECU doesn't cut back boost from overboost at about 14-16 psi on basically stock programming.

3700 lbs? V70-XC70

" A FWD 855 weighs in at around 3700lbs without the driver."

Are you absolutely sure about this? A 245, which is a larger wagon, weighs just shy of 3100 lbs.

(I just checked Consumer Guide and they list the 854's curb weight @ 3232 lbs. and the 855's @ 3342.)

3700 lbs? V70-XC70

I don't think the 245 is larger. I had one for a while. The 7 and 9 wagons WERE larger than the 855.

According to a Road and Track special on the 850 before it was even released in North America, the 855 was listed at about 3500-5700 without the driver, with the sedan coming in at about 3300-3500.

Maybe the two were using different criteria for test weight?

Disappointing results in the 1/4 mile! V70-XC70

Mike,

I have a 97 850R, I did have the stage 3 BSR kit which was an ECU 3" dp with cat and 2.5 " exhaust, with a rising rate fuel pressure reg and k&n air filter. I sold the parts and am now selling the car as my family is expanding. My car with practice would do 14.0 @ 103.5 it took a lot of practice on the launch. I would have my foot on the brake and rev the engine to about 1000 rpm then at the green let off the brake so the car jumps forward then start feeding the gas on with the cars momentum, or else I'd bog or spin.
Hope this helps.

Well, I have ordered the EA 120 HP kit to help improve the car's lack luster performance. I will post my results once installed and track tested!

Thanks For all the responces!

Mike
