Automatic Shift Knob 850

Hey all. I have really been wanting to replace the boring automatic shift knob on my '95 850 GLT with something a little snazzier, like maybe something found here. http://www.mach3accessories.com/shiftknobs.html I have been doing some digging on this board and seems that I have heard a lot of people saying to remove the old one, all you have to do is pull up really hard, and to install the new one, all you have to do is push it down into the shaft. Is this really true? Sounds almost waay too easy and good to be true. Are there any other factors needed for consideration in replacement? Or are all aftermarket knobe compatible? Thanks for the help everyone. :)

SO anyone know about the universality of aftermarket auto shift knobs? Would those ones at http://www.mach3accessories.com/shiftknobs.html work? They sure would spruce up an otherwise dull interior. Any and all thoughts and comments are welcome and appreciated.

Kippy, like you, I was also interested in an aftermarket shift knob. Below you'll find Mach3 Accessories' reply to my inquiry:

"To be honest with you, I'm not sure. We have never installed any of our automatic shift knobs on a Volvo. I know Volvos are metric based, not US standard. Our shift knobs are also metric based. However, I'm not sure if they will fit perfectly.some minor modifications might be needed. Also, I remember that some Volvos have an over drive button on the shift knob. You might need to get the shift knob with an over drive button installed on it. Even then, I'm not sure if it will fit. I am curious my self."

Oops, sorry man, must have overlooked that the first time. It is a puzzler aint it? Sure like to find out without taking a $105 gamble. Also like to have a Volvo with a working shift knob. ;)

It's cool. It's the reason--and a good one--that this forum exists. Me thinks I'll just upgrade my shift knob with one made of leather from an 850 GLT or Turbo; mine is the base plastic version--it works fine on the shifts, but doesn't feel great on the touch. Good luck.

Even the Volvo manual says to 'stradle the console and pull real hard. The issue is that it tears up the little plastic devices that hold it in. So... you usually have to throw the old one away... Oh well.....

It will be ruined, and you'll have to get a new shift arm and knob.....
(Only In America!!!) That's planned obsolecense.

Are you guys sure? I'm pretty certain it is possible to remove the shift knob
without damaging anything. There is a holder inside the leather boot that
keeps the leather stationary. Twist it 90 degrees (i think) and lower the boot.
Then just pull up on the shift knob. The Haynes manual doesn't say anything about possible damage. Just wondering.

            Hi,

I am not sure in 97 model, but in 95 model, old knob cannot be reused. I changed mine to wood trim knob and the plastic clip inside the old knob was broken when pulling it out (very hard by sitting on the armrest). You are right about the leather boot under the knob. It needs to be disconnected from the knob first before the removal of the knob. Volvo instruction did say that old knob cannot be reused.

It's the silly plastic retainers that get trashed. Or so I'm told by a Volvo machanic...

I dont think it will "always" be ruined, but certainly there is a chance. When I picked mine up for delivery, the knob was chipped. They went over to another brand new one on the lot (I didnt want to wait for an order...) and they yanked it out and put it in mine. Nothing was broken, worked fine. Again, that was brand new though..an older one is probably more risky.
