Charcoal cabin filter V70-XC70 2001

We have a new 2001 XC and I wanted to change from the normal cabin air filter to the charcoal filter as my wife has chemical/vapor allergies.

I got the filter, located the filter box below the dashboard on the passenger side, removed the four screws on the base and removed the base. I then removed the standard filter and went to install the charcoal filter, but it was thicker than the original. It appears that the filter would fit in the rear half of the filter box--it's the right size and has a keyway for the key sticking out of the filter frame. The only problem is, there is what appears to be a bar of plastic "sprue" blocking the entry.

I'm thinking that I just break this sprue off and put the filter in the back compartment, but I just want to make sure before I do anything.

Also, since the standard filter is brand new, I was wondering if it would be OK to leave both filters in (since they both fit in at the same time) for added particle filtration? Would this pose any risk to the ventilation system by reducing airflow?

Thanks,

Bob

Is this charcoal filter part of the AQS (Air Quality System) Option that you can order on the 2001 and 2002 XC? When we bought our XC in October 2001, we could not locate one with the AQS option. Then I spoke with the service department to see if they could order the parts and install for us. He said that it was a factory installed option only. Well about 2 months ago I emailed Volvo's web site and they give me a part number for the AQS. I never ordered the part but as I understand it, you have a switch on the dash by your HVAC controls where you can switch this filter on and off when needed.

The activated charcoal filter is a just a filter element you can install any time you want, it's not exclusively part of the AQS option.

As I understand it, all the AQS option does is monitor the incoming air and when it detects fumes or such in the incoming air stream, it automatically switches the ventilation system to recirculate (which continuously recirculates the cabin air theough the charcoal filter).

I think it's a nice option, but realistically you can manually switch to recirculate whenever you want.

We tend to use recirculate not so much to remove external pollutants, but to reomve as much of the outgassing from the new plastics in the car as we can!

Bob, I went thru this with my S80 and the situation seems identical. I cut the sprue out with a dremel cutoff blade and slipped in the charcoal. If you loose too much air flow, which I did with just the one new filter in, the dealer can adjust the fan speed with Vadis. No download req'd, just an adjustment (mine was the first they did). Should work for you.

Are you saying you needed to have the airflow adjusted just with the Charcoal filter alone?

Did you try using both filters at the same time?

      Thanks.

Yes, I noticed a decreased air flow with the new filter alone. I think that leaving both in may be overkill as I suspect the first function of the new filter to be exhausted will be the charcoal and I don't expect it to clog in my environment. The adjustment restored the old air flow. There are two steps up and two down from the nominal point for blower speed. The adjustment seems to be fully effective with either manual fan speed settings or those selected by the climate control. Nothing ventured, nothing lost! :)
