850R WASTE GATE 850

My 1996 855R has been giving eratic boost lately, a shop i took it to disconected the waste gate and said it won't hurt the motor. The boost is great and the car is back like it should be but i'm very nervous watching the boost gauge go past the entire white area! Am I headed for a blown engine? seals? gaskets? or just a lot of fun? The car just turned 100,000 miles and everything else is in great shape. The performance was lacking but I don't want to sacrafice the engine at this point.

He removed the wastegate and allowed you to drive it?!?!?! You've got to be kidding me!!! It won't hurt the motor?! True, if you don't run it.

This guy is either not very in the know about boost, or just without logic. I say get your waste gate back, go to another shop/dealership, and never look back.

As for eratic boost, the other post has some good places to look. I'd start there.

Get this car to somebody who knows what they're doing!! It won't be long until you're fishing pistons out of the oilpan.

Eratic boost is most likely due to a bad seal around one of the lines from the turbo to the intercooler or from the intercooler to the manifold. Possible other vacuum leaks exist...and they're all cheap and easy to fix. This shade tree mechanic stuff. Another possible source could be related to the processor, but you'd have to be able to scan and read codes.

Before you move the car another inch, check all the lines and connections, and re-attach the wastegate.
