Bay 13 where are you??? 850 1995

Are the oil pan bolts single-use bolts? I am trying to solve a leak, and have been successful, by retorqueing the bolts in their proper sequence at 28-40 ft/lbs.. However, I remembered that some fasteners are meant to be used only once or twice. What say you Bay 13 and fellow Volvophiles??(Torques were kept to 30#'s)

Bay 13 is here. Click on 'message board' and he runs the maintenance section. He also has a really good section on repairs with many pictures.

Any oil pan bolts can be used again and again. They are not a high stress part. If you have a leak, check the oil seperator box for leaks and look for a gasket leak, make sure the flame trap is clean. It may need to be retightened or need a new O-ring.

Don't overtighten the oil pan bolts since the block is aluminum and the threads may strip.

I'm not affiliated with Bay 13 but those bolts are very reusable and although I'm sure there are torque specs for them, it's really not critical, just "tight" works for me.
Now, if you've removed the pan and using the OEM Volvo sealant, letting it dry overnight before adding oil (at least that's what I do), there's no way it should leak. If you're having a problem with just one or more bolts showing signs of seapage from the threads, then the cure is to remove that bolt, use brakeclean to degrease the threaded areas and let dry, then apply sealant to the bolts threads. Silicone sealant works well for that job.

Hi ya Swedeman,

Don’t quite understand the question. Do you mean the drain plug for the oil in the sump/pan? If you are then no this is reusable and should use a fresh aluminium ring every time.

If on the other hand you were dropping the sump/pan I would put new bolts in myself.

Thanks for the directions. The bolts I am talking about are the oil-pan bolts. We did have a leak, but not anymore. I will look into all that has been mentioned in the above responses. Thanks again for all your inputs. Swede
