Service Light - Strange Question V70-XC70 1998

Ok, so I have a 98 v70t5 and the service light came on. I checked a the board and found that the 98's need the scan tool to be reset, but that the 99 and on cars can be reset using a combination of turning on the ignition and trip meter reset button. I tried the reset procedure just for fun to no avail.

So my question is, what controls the reset light? Is it some sort of control module / computer or maybe a relay of some sort? If so, would it be possible to do a software upgrade to that module or replace the relay with the same version that the 99's have or is it all too integrated? Any ideas? Just a crazy thought I figured I'd throw out there.

Service Light - Use Black Electrical Tape V70-XC70 1998

    Hi HFR,

I fixed this annoying problem few years ago.
As you know, 1998 needs reset tool, subwequent years 1999----
can be reset by following the procedure you mentioned.

I have been using a small electrical tape (black) cut to 1" x 1".
The nice thing about this SI light is in the corner, so the black eletrical tape is not even noticeable.

You can at least try this to see if it works for you.
    It works for me.

    Good Luck.

    Service Light - Strange Question V70-XC70 1998

It is all in software. I suspect updating a car's software is a big
deal (just think about the testing program required) so I doubt there
    are any upgrades.

Since it is software, I'm waiting for the day when the car comes with an
ethernet port and a built-in web server so I can just go to my cars'
home page and turn off the light, change the auto lock programing, etc.
Now that would be cool. Skip the intro....

    HFR,
Your ECM (Engine Control Module) combined with sensors controls all things electronic including your service lamp. Software update? Unlikely...
